This movie was a fun romp. Very well cast and well acted. Each character was believable in their role (did his family really have to be that awful?).
There were, as expected, cringe worthy moments -- and by cringe-worthy, I mean so embarrassing as to make you squirm in your seat. In the end, an underdog story where the guy gets the girl of his dreams.
The movie's visual effects were stunning. The main problem of the film was that it was clearly social commentary on something – but what? The Palestinian conflict? The German's in WWII? In short: ostracizing people who are different is bad (obvious) and government is bad and will always lie to you (good point - but don't we all know this). I spent so much time trying to guess the allegory, that I missed the film. The lead character was so annoyingly naive that I kept hoping (and expecting) that he would die and the real main character would be revealed. It never happened. The twist at the end was feeble and predictable.
