Best Film of the Year

This is the kind of film I dream about. A well-paced, thoughtful, sci-fi film that isn't afraid to be R-rated. You may have also heard of another sci-fi film about aliens in which the main character goes rogue and fights his own company. But where Avatar beats you over the head with its eco-friendly message, District 9 subtlety holds the mirror up to us. The acting is top-notch, the creatures are original, the camera shots are inventive, and the directing is phenomenal. The story unfolds like an amalgamation of COPS and Alien Nation and ends with one of the best action sequences I've ever seen. It's hard to believe that this is the man's first feature-film. I wish you a succesful career Mr. Blomkamp.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

America's in Love Again!

I don't hate Avatar, only what it's become. All of America going doe-eyed like they haven't seen Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, or any cowboys and indians tale. Again, I like the film. I see the gorgeous vistas that have painstakingly been brought to life, the numerous creatures and plants, and the elegant Na'vi themselves. But when everyone can't stop talking about how inspired they were, I can't stop talking about how inspired Cameron was. The plot's similarities, the Na'vi are allusions to Native Americans, and he even used a pop singer again. Sorry Avatar, but my Film of the Year goes to another sci-fi alien fable about imperialism, race issues, and main characters going rogue: District 9.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Where's the Best Picture Nom?

What's there to say that hasn't already been said? Christopher Nolan, like David Fincher, specializes in dark, cerebral films and this is no exception. The acting is top-notch, the action scenes are inventive and visceral, and the 2 hours and 30 minute run time could not have gone faster. The only thing that seemed to bother me was that Bruce Wayne seemed to take a backseat in this one, receiving less dialogue. I absolutely loved Batman Begins (I am not just saying that because I still haven't decided which is best, I am no jumper of bandwagons) and this is an exceptional sequel. I just wish that the Academy hadn't fawned over the overrated Slumdog Millionaire.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Please Stop Roland Emmerich

Roland Emmerich seems to only make two kinds of movies: a) disaster movies; b) criminally bad movies; or - as with most of his "films" - c) both. 2012 falls under category c). I can't really say anything about it other than Woody Harrelson stopped himself short of a near-flawless year with The Messenger and Zombieland under his belt by his ludicrous performance here. The only reason I gave it two stars is because it's freaking hilarious. It might even be funnier than The Hangover or Zombieland. A little tip for you Mr. Emmerich, don't try to put themes of the importance of human life and scenes of old people driving their car straight into the pits of hell in the same movie.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Absolutely Wrong

Excuse the title but I couldn't think of anything else. All of the actors are bored or seemingly bored (Benicio Del Toro sunk his own money into the project but still doesn't look excited), the film is extremely rushed and uninteresting, and the action scenes are few and far-between. Another issue I would like to address is the film's effects. I have no problem with the old-timey make-up and prosthetics for the actual wolfman that harken back to the 1941 original, but the "real" animals in the film are computer-generated. I just cannot accept that a real deer would pose a great threat to the crew. But then again a deer would probably have more bite than this wolf does.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Two In A Row For Marvel!

I had a feeling that this would be a 5-star just because they wouldn't have an excuse to make another glaring disappointment after Ang Lee's version. First things first, this is head and shoulders above Ang Lee's 2003 utter disaster. People want to see the Green Giant smash things not fight giant poodles or have a stupid fight with his dad (who turns into a freaking cloud for God's sake). I am happy to say that there was none of that. Edward Norton is great as Bruce Banner (reminiscent of Bill Bixby), as is Liv Tyler and William Hurt as Betty Ross and her father. This one doesn't waste time on the origin story and has some of the best action sequences I have ever seen. The Hulk looks cooler this time around, too. More like a linebacker than a defensive lineman as he was in 2003. You must see this if you haven't already! Heck, see it twice or thrice. Ang Lee, eat your heart out.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Too Much of the Same Ol' Thing

I never realized until a few weeks after I saw it how boring this movie really is. Basically, if you've seen the first movie you've seen this one. A bunch of kids transport to a weird fantasy world where they kill people. Yay! The end. Let's go see it! It's nothing special but if you liked the first one you'll definitely LOVE this one. It's 140 minutes of the same ol', same ol' but if that's what you want summer moviegoers.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Weirdly Satisfying Film From The Matrix Creators

I'm going to explain to you throughout this review why I gave this film four stars but did not recommend it. I want to start off by saying that I love the casting, the trippy, Tim Burtonesque visuals, the satisfying races, and John Goodman but I don't think other people will. I have to say this is a really, really weird movie. Sometimes I would look around at the other people to see if they just saw what I saw. In my opinion its a very artistic film that will most likely enjoy a cult following but hardly any mainstream fans.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Decent Kung Fu Flick

This movie is pretty stupid. Sorry, Jackie Chan, but it had to be said. This movie is pretty entertaining if you let it but to people who don't usually watch these kinds of movies I doubt they'll like this one with teenagers going to alternate fantasy realms and Monkey Kings (don't ask) and whatnot. The acting is decent from everyone but the script is run-of-the-mill and not executed too well, but you can have some fun if you let it.

Marvel's Back On Track!

I was a bit skeptical of this movie at first because it seems like they're just churning out more and more superhero movies for profit and because of Marvel's last few outings like the disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand or the downright awful Ghost Rider, but I can happily say that I was totally blown away. The pacing is perfect: one scene of nicely sprinkled dialogue and then another filled with slam-bang action. Also, the acting is just brilliant with Robert Downey Jr. giving the best performance I have EVER seen in a superhero film. Along with Elf, Jon Favreau now has another classic under his belt. Another thing is that, like the Spider-Man films, there is hardly any offensive content in it, so to you parents out there, I think you should take your kids out to see it because they will have fun and you will have fun.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
