Without doubt, the best Carmen I've ever seen (and I've seen dozens). Aside from a few minor issues with the French pronunciation of the non-French singers, this production is outstanding. Alagna is probably the best Don Jose currently available and of course his French is impeccable. See it if you can.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Grandiose Aida

Overall an enjoyable production, especially for those who like "Verdi Produced As If Wagner." Everything here is massive, from the sets to the voices to the waistlines of the singers. There is another way to render this score, a score that is actually very delicate in places. But it seems from the other reviewers that this grandiose mode of Aida production is popular. I agree with other reviewers that, in the movie theatre, the intermissions are insufferably long.
Although I'm not particularly fond of the music of John Adams, this opera was very interesting from a historical perspective. I particularly enjoyed the intermission features of interviews with people involved in the original 1945 Manhattan project. The singing was excellent and the production interesting, with the various visual and sound effects. I would recommend this production even to those, like myself, who usually avoid modern opera.
A great movie of the opening night gala, with lots of beutiful costumes, wigs, sets and the A list people in attendance. There was the great tenor Ramon Vargas and of course Renee Fleming, who always looks ravishing and can certainly act, but vocally is not perfect.
