Jim Sheridan is one of those rare directors with an almost perfect track record, until the release of this average, frankly cliched, thriller that seems to only have served as a way for Craig and Weisz to get together and has only attracted this much star power (Watts) because of the director's past work, particularly with fellow Brit, Daniel Day-Lewis. Oh well, at least there seems to be plently of Oscar-bait this year to go around.
When I saw The Cruise, I knew a great director was finding their voice, then Capote cemented it and with Moneyball, Bennett Miller is here to stay as a new cinematic force. Again, like Black Swan, you don't have to be interested in the subject matter to enjoy the great filmmaking, but I did since I collected baseball cards as a kid and wondered what all those numbers on the back of them meant. Moneyball is a film about taking something fundamentally simple and physical and redefining it with something intellectual. Forget about picking players for superficial reasons, LOOK AT THE STATS, DUH! No wonder there was a stretch from 2001-2008 where the Yankees didn't win a Series. Finally, the game is fair again!
It was only inevitable that classics will now be released with a 3D do-over. Let's hope they pick the right ones, this is one of them! Enjoy it while it lasts.
I have seen all of his work and it is all high caliber filmmaking. From his early little known indies to his blockbusters. It is all stamped with the same steely eyed view of how the world maybe a little off that day for its characters, but it's more fun that way. His take on the pandemic genre is what I have been waiting for with this genre to do. It treats it like its really happening without all the cliches and from a more personal point of view from the characters on all sides of the issue. It's Hollywood at its best, without the "Hollywood" baggage. Soderburgh is one of the few Hollywood directors that has been able to work thru his career without attaching baggage to him, like his films themselves.
He is a master of the for-the-most-part objective documentary. Again, discovering a story that is fascinating and telling it from all sides, except for pour Kirk in this case, but a magnificent "performance" from Joyce McKinney makes up for that!! MUST SEE!!!
I think a lot of people are not going to understand this film or even want to begin to try, but I think it was very though provoking and interesting. Godard is always reinventing cinema and this film is no exception. Years from now it will be studied like his other films already are. BRILLIANT!!!
Only a seasoned eccentric veteran like Werner Herzog can come up with the genius idea of a documentary in 3D!!!!!! It will be interesting to anyone with any amount of adventure. It made a lot of sense to film in 3D and some shots looked converted to 3D in post, but it brings out the shape of the cave walls and makes it more intimate. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!
First of all, after seeing Terrence Malick's first 4 films and knowing how far apart they were released (how much time and care he takes), everyone should know this will be an instant classic before even seeing it. This was the only unsurprising thing about the film though. This is the most existential and transendental of Malick's films. It is more a story and history of time on planet Earth than it is about a family in the 1950's and how a son grapples with his upbringing. This is Malick's Magnun Opus and the photography and editing are like no other!!!! The acting is also great by a bunch of unknowns and Brad Pitt and Sean Pitt, surreal unto itself.
You don't have to like Woody Allen to like his new film, Midnight in Paris. It is fun and unpredictable like all his classics, but has something for everyone. It is a romantic comedy, but you will like it whether you like romcoms or not. Definitely see it if you like art history, secifically art history of Paris in the 1920's. You will see a film you will not forget and really appreciate!!!
This was a brilliant film adaptation of Swan Lake into a life-imitating-art stylized thriller and one of those rare horror classics. Must see!!!!!!!!!!
