Anthony Hopkins is destined for another Oscar, in probably the funnest movie this year for film buffs. Every behind the scenes detail makes the original film that more interesting to view again. They seamlessly intertwined the Ed Gein story with the making like it was an episode of his TV series in a very creative way that also showed the haunted mind of Hitch. Great fun!! See it ASAP!!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, film history
Mr. Penn's career has mostly been unpredictable and he has more than shown that with his latest venture as an ancient rocker finishing his estranged father's business tracking a Nazi. Great character studies. Steller cast!
Burton is one of the few directors working that comes out with a classic every time. When you are an artist that people either completely love or totally hate, that means he's original, even though half the stuff he does are remakes, he's still original, and that takes bravado. MUST SEE, along with the original series!
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, burtonesque, deppesque
This movie is great because of Michelle William's portrail of Marilyn Monroe as the real person she was. It really seems like they are trying to get to who she really was rather than imitate some legend. MUST SEE!!! This will make you forget Williams made her name from some stupid TV teen drama crap.
Hugo in 3D is a new classic in the family film genre. It makes complete sense that this is the kind of kid's film Scorsese would make with half of it being about Georges Melies (Ben Kinsley), the French film pioneer who invented cinematic special effects (Scorsese being a film historian and preservationist and all). The other half of the film being an Oliver Twist-like story (Scorsese loving a good hard-edged drama and all). Great fun!!!
Alexander Payne hasn't directed a feature since Sideways and I knew once he finally did it would be a classic. His first four were classics, why wouldn't this be another one. It uses Hawaii perfectly and captures the families fighting and struggles without one misstep. MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eastwood's portrait of the first head of the FBI seems to try and be as truthful as possible and the performances show this. DiCaprio's make-up isn't as bad as everyone says it is, but I guess it could have been better, everyone else's make-up is great. Watts I think is the best in the movie, along with the supporting cast. Leo will probably be nominated. Must see!
When I first heard about this documentary, I thought, "A doc about a President of a third world nation trying to do something environmental at the G9 Summit? HOW BORING!" But it TOTALLY WASN'T boring. The doc is really riveting and interesting and more high stakes than you think. Their country is about to be swallowed up by the ocean and they even have a conference under water at one point to prove their point. Michael Moore approves of it also, because he was there at the NYC Doc Festival screening and I met him! and he did a Q&A with the director afterwards and it was great! Have fun viewing this great doc.
On the surface it doesn't seem like the most interesting stuff, but compared to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Rum Diary gives a more realistic portrait of Hunter S. Thompson on the job, which is probably more fascinating anyway. I think a lot of people are expecting the over-the-top-shanigans of Fear...Vegas, but Bruce Robinson is British and his sensibilities are understated and subtle (more sophisticated), but I think that is what Depp also wanted, which is why they made it together. This is Robinson's first directing job in 19 years and his first writing job in 10 years, so people who are fans of his, and especially of Withnail and I, are probably more excited than they are for a Hunter/Depp collaboration. So the fact that it is all three makes it a must see, and with some patience and intelligence anyone will enjoy it.
I think this is the best film Clooney has made as director along with Goodnight, and Good Luck. It is very slick and concise, probably lessons he has picked up from the Coen Brothers. But the mood of the film itself is more like classic 70s political thrillers with a gloss over of current political climates. Great film to expect at the Oscars!
