Maginificent Singing

This magificent production was distinguished by outstanding singing on the part of all the principals: Jonas Kaufmann as Faust; Rene Pape as Mephistopheles, and Marina Poplavaskaya as Marguerite. The emotional intensity was superb at all the moments of high drama. My one reservation was over the inclusion of some portions of the opera that are frequently omitted, such as the Walpurgisnacht scene in Act 3, which tended to slow the action and make for an overly long evening. The relocation of the setting of the opera to the post-war atomic age was provocative but not wholly successful
I am happy to add that, unlike other recent HD transmissions, the transmission of the opera was flawless.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Le Comte Ory

This was a simply superb production. Diana Damrau, Joyce di Donato, and Juan Diego Flores were all magnficent. All the principals were in magnificent voice, as were the performers in a secondary role such as Susanne Resmark and Stephane Degout. Some scenes, particularly the second act bedroom scene, were absolutely hilarious, verging on a slapstick that is seldom seen in an opera. Strongly recommended.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Don Carlo

The actual performance was superb and well worth the five hours' duration.
But the presentation was marred when we saw it by major problems with the video feed, which meant that all we could see during the whole first two acts was a highly distorted image in black and white. This is not acceptable. (We viewed the event at AMC in Tysons Corner, Virginia,)
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Superb Don Pasquale

This Met production of Don Pasquale was simply superb. Anna Netrebko was delightful and very funny as Norina. She was ably supported by Matthew Polenzani as Ernesto, Mariusz Kwiecien as the scheming Dr. Malatesta, and the veteran John del Carlo as Don Pasquale. The opera was a joy from beginning to end. Strongly recommended.

The Met Opera performance of Carmen was simply stupendous. The beautiful Elina Garanca is one of my favoriate opera divas and her singing and acting in this performance were magnificent. Roberto Alagna was also fine. It was the most moving and exciting performance of Bizet's opera I have seen.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Met Opera gala opening was simply superb. Renee Fleming was in fine form, taking on three difficult acts from three separate operas. It was truly a memorable evening.
Two quibbles: first, the subtitles were not displayed until midway through the first part and, second, there were too many switches to fans watching in Times Square and too many interviews with people whose views one did not care about.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
