Arguably the greatest Verdi opera. Dramatic story line. Great music. For this performance great conducting, great playing, and great, great singing. Let's face it, sitting from 12:30 PM until 5:10 PM can really be a very long time. Not so for this performance. The acting was so engaging that one was just swept up in the drama. As always the Met chorus was superb. But the combination of great singing and acting from the principals just made for a wonderful afternoon. Opera at its greatest.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A New Dimension

Turandot at the Met is best seen at the Met. But since I sit where the oxygen is thin this added a whole new dimension to seeing this fabulous production. Zefferali usually suffers at the hands of the critics, but then his productions survive for years (decades). Act two always provides a gasp when the lights go up. The cast was terrific. Maria had some problems in the low register but acted wonderfully and sounded much better than I expected. The convenience in travel, especially in winter months is a great plus. There had been several showings of the opera before the night we went and yet the theater was full. I don't think you find this size crowd for regular movies on a weekday night. Something for the powers that be to consider.
