An excellent look at how the political process can jade the most idealistic character (Gossling's). It's somewhat predictable and so I would not categorize it as a "thriller" but simply a drama. Still, well acted by all. Some interesting political messages and positions also crafted into the movie as those of the candidate, few of which I've actually heard a politician espouse.
Wait for DVD release, after you've rented all the better movies available. This one has some suspense and a decent cast but the characters are not particularly engaging. I wouldn't call the plot bad, but it's not outstanding (and does have some holes). Overall, a so-so movie.
This movie has enough action to be somewhat entertaining but it also has a rather one-dimensional antagonist and an unoriginal theme. Anybody with a whiff of scientific knowledge will also recognize that the premise is also far-fetched. If you don't want to feel a bit ripped off, wait for it to come out on DVD, and maybe even after it comes off of the "new release" list.
Many of the raves of other users on this site seem a little over-the-top to me, but this is a decent movie, well acted, well scripted. And it is a reasonably interesting story, made more so by it's historical aspect. I didn't leave the movie disappointed. However, with movies that I would consider truly great, I generally leave with a sense of awe or suprise, or I find myself going over various scenes in my mind and finding new levels. It is that sort of response that might prompt me to see it again. That didn't happen with this one. So, don't expect anything that will make you think, but watch and enjoy anyway.
Nothing new here in terms of theme. There are similarities wiith Rocky, although given that this was based on a true story, we can be fairly certain there will be no sequel(s). The one stand-out feature is the performance of Christian Bale - exceptional! Other performances are only ok, but to be fair, the roles were not as challenging. Overall, maybe consider waiting to rent on DVD.
Definitely needs to be seen on the big screen because effects are one of the few assets. Pretty good acting too (I've come to expect that from Leonardo). The premise is laughable and the plot has holes you could drive a truck through. It is very convoluted at times (even paying close attention, I was getting lost). Nevertheless, it was entertaining. Don't look for this one on Oscar night, although it might get a nomination for the special effects or score.
I highly recommend you see Avatar in 3D at the theater. The visual effects are spectacular. Be warned, although the story is entertaining enough, the plot is rather predictable, the themes are old hat, and the characters (although mostly well-acted) are rather one-dimensional. So, it is not really worth renting on DVD or even seeing in regular theater (it is playing as “just a regular movie” in some theaters, ie., not in 3D). However, it is worth the price of admission for the 3D effects on the big screen. This was better than the 3D that I remember from the 1970s, and the imagery of the Pandora planet wouldn’t be captured nearly as effectively without it.
If you were expecting a faithful remake of the original, you may be disappointed. However, this version is action-packed and has good performances all around. It won't be an Oscar-contender, but it is an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. Compared with most of the schlock out there, this is not bad at all.
Nick Cage has done it again - underachieved. The movie started promising enough, but when the "whisper" people made their first appearance, I silently hoped they weren't going where I thought they were going with that plot line. They were. The movie becomes a biblical analogy, rather in the way Battlestar Galactica provided an ancient Egyptian element. And it doesn't seem to be particularly well thought out. In the end, Nick appears to find his spiritual belief in an afterlife, even though the parallel would have suggested that previous biblical stories might be based on alien visits rather than any "God" or afterlife. How an actor as talented as Cage can pick such trash is truly disappointing.
For fans of such Ben Stiller classics as Meet the Parents and There's Something About Mary, this movie will be a disappointment. The funniest parts occur within the first 30 mins - the rest drags on. Once the initial shock of Tom Cruise swearing a blue streak is over, his character ceases to hold any interest. Even Downey can't save this lackluster script. As for Jack Black, well, I'm not a fan at the best of times so there's no surprise there. Wait for it to come to DVD, and is off the new release shelf.
