kids will love it...adults will be bored

What disney does well, sony did not do at all. This is really a kid's movie with no clever subtle adult humor to keep parents engaged. Your kids will laugh and enjoy, but it is predictable and mindless for any mature viewers.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

a solid pre-quel to the stark trek TV series

I think this is a movie for those who know and appreciate the TV series. I liked it, as a clever prequel. There was nothing that stands out in terms of effects, but the story was good, and overall entertaining.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
