The "Predator" story has always been built on mystery. Who are these creatures? What has led to their predatory activities? Do they see their prey as anything but? How did they find and why do they pursue humanity?
The new "Predators" movie has re-energized a fun story by staying true to the original, mysterious circumstances, leading us into a little more information, then showing how what we know opens more questions than it provides answers. The movie doesn't try to pack in one CG "wow" after another but underplays the action in order to build the suspense. And when the suspense explodes the ride is well-worth the anticipation. Is it possible to "care" about a Predator? Just what does their predatory nature mean? How predatory is humanity and at what cost are we true to our essential natures?
"Predators" provides depth and action, made possible through excellent direction and powerful performances, particularly by Adrien Brody and Tropher Grace. The main characters are not mere place-holders in the midst of mindless, meaningless action sequences, they represent something of who we are and hold up a mirror which asks us to confront the potential horror and promise of our own being.
Strong acting, powerful direction and a script which understands, honors and advances both the fun and the nuance of the original, all make "Predators" more than a worthy successor to the original. It's gone one better.
You should see District 9 because it is visually stunning and a (mostly) fun ride. HOWEVER there is nothing to commend it beyond that.
The "story" is inconsistent and undeveloped. It's simply a justification for the action. The direction takes an uninspired, shot-gun approach, giving us everything we've seen in any other action movie. Beyond that the themes and are simplistic rip-offs of much better (and even much worse!) movies.
All the effort was put into the sets and the CG, leaving nothing else to create an actually good movie and it shows.
