Brüno Bombs?

There were parts of Sacha Baron Cohen's latest docu-comedy that made me smirk but none that had me guffawing or even close to rolling in the aisle. Maybe seeing Brüno in an almost completely empty auditorium had something to do with my reaction. The one other person who was there when the film began got up and walked out after the first half hour; another person did come in about fifteen minutes late and chortled on the way to his seat. There were two or three more audible guffaws before dead silence from the meager "crowd" watching the movie. Did the latecomer stay until the "bitter end," who knows?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Both Foxx & Downey Merit Oscar Nods

This is one of those movies where both stars deserve Oscar nominations for their performances.
It was definitely not a "feel good" movie by any wild stretch of the imagination; however, it was a movie of hope. Hope that people with mental disorders can be accepted as human beings irrespective of their condition. Acceptance in my not so humble opinion is what raises The Soloist from bathos to its level of hope.
Will Robert Downey, Jr., downgrade his billing to co-star in order for both Jamie Foxx and himself to garner the Oscars both of them richly deserve for their performances in The Soloist? Only time will tell and tell if it was a successfull ploy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Totally Different Legacy

I knew before seeing W. it was not an exposé and was, in fact, a somewhat sympathetic depiction of George Walker Bush. However, I did not expect to feel sorry for the man despite his hubris and his shortcomings. I am certain pity is not the legacy Bush 43 would want; nevertheless, this is the legacy for which Oliver Stone makes a strong case.
Josh Brolin is superb as the younger Bush, catching the essence of his character without caricaturizing it. James Cromwell as Bush 41 was the most miscast of the performers followed closely by Thandie Newton's Condoleeza Rice. Richard Dreyfuss, however, is superb as Dick Cheney.
By all means, see Oliver Stone's W. if you will not be upset by feeling sorry for the title character by movie's end.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
