I'm not a critic by any means, and most of the time I disagree with them, but this time I'm not so sure.
This movie seemed to have little to no hype prior to its release. I just happened to see the poster on the wall in the theater, and being a fan of sci-fi I stopped to try and find out more about it. My expectations for the movie were to see some good special effects and get the typical storyline, aliens invade, kick butt, people retaliate, rally, and eventually save the day. To the writer's credit... not so.
The special effects were pretty good and the acting for the most part was on par with the special effects. Eric Balfour gave the best performance in the cast, however, there were quite a few of the typical cliche story points that we've come to expect from the Hollywood Sci-Fi production line.
I thought that the movie was good until the very end. I truly liked the premise that everything doesn't always workout; as it is in life. But... that ending... come on... WHO CAME UP WITH THAT??? That's where they lost me. This movie is reminiscent of Cloverfield, however, in my opinion... that definitely came out on top.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie because I went in with little to no expectations and allowed myself to just be entertained. The movie was good mindless entertainment, a step above watching a Sy Fy channel release. I can't say that it would be a good movie for Friday or Saturday night... better you save the experience for a Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
Loved the action sequences... the earthquake sequence was phenominal! However, the plane landing on the ice, and cars driving out of the bay doors??? (That's too cheesy for this level of movie.)
