As you'd expect with a cast like this, RED is very watchable and exciting, with lots of charisma and loads of things blowing up. However, a movie with a bad guy needs a really, really good bad guy. At the end of the day, it matters that we like the heros, but it is crucial that we've bought into the villian. And the villian here is....well, vanilla. OK, but not a lot of pizzazz. Final opinion: I'd recommend it, but it won't be the best movie you've seen.
Meryl Streep is amazing, as always, and stands out in a cast that is terrific. Loved this movie. Lots of laughs, reasons to think and reflect. Unlike other movies seen this summer, I am happy I saw it. I'll rent it to see it again, when it hits DVD.
I didn't expect to like this movie, but I did. Premise is funny. Lots of sight gags. Dialog does not obsess on bodily functions. Characters: stereotypical, don't gain depth. But Anna Faris, House Bunny, is all you think a real PB Bunny might be, mixed in with everything you want in a best friend. Colin Hanks is the spitting image of his dad in every way. Movie message: be yourself (sort of,) and everyone is beautiful on the inside. Like yourself and others will like you, too. A valuable lesson, especially for impressionable little girls, but it comes in content that will make some parents squirm. Parents - go see it first and decide!
