Tin Tin - An Adventure for the ages.

Director Steven Spielberg creates a world of animation that only he could imagine. A young boy’s adventures run wild in a world of comic book excitement. Tin Tin is a young reporter whose curiosity is insatiable and which takes him from one scrape to the next in search of a scoop. He has an adorable dog Snowy who is always there in the nick of time to help when all seems lost. This adventure revolves three model ships that each has a secret map hidden in one its masts. The maps lead to ancient treasure from days of yore when pirates ruled the seas. The evil Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine is trying to get all three maps so he can discover the treasure. Tin Tin with the help of Snowy, the inebriated Captain Haddock and the two pompous and inept detectives saves the day. They will travel the world by ship, life raft, plane and foot to save the treasure and lift an ancient curse. The graphics are amazing as the chase scenes just keep building and building until we are exhausted and then the day is won.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

This fourth installment of the film franchise is by far and away the best of them all. It is two hours of non-stop action that just pulses with adrenalin. Treachery in Budapest, a beautiful blonde spy, escapes from a Moscow prison, clever thefts from secret Kremlin files, scaling the outside of a high rise hotel in Dubai like a spider, cat fights, seducing an Indian playboy to get his satellite codes, driving in Mumbai, saving the world from nuclear holocaust, revenge, and a number of clever plot twists are but some of the action threads that propel the film. Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Paula Patton are perfect as the MI squad that can and did save the world. The film sets up the fifth installment, and it should be great if they can again harness this kind of energy.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Thors

The great Norse myths are played out in thunderous extravagance on distant planets and in a small New Mexico town. Anthony Hopkins is Odin, Aussie newcomer Chris Hemsworth is Thor and Natalie Portman (who else?) is Thor’s earthling love interest. Director Kenneth Branagh can’t help himself and inserts some Shakespearian elements into the comic book adventure. The plot is mostly silly and takes all sorts of weird turns as it is unimportant; the battle scenes from the ice planet, Asgard and the New Mexico desert are important. Thor is quite a stud (his physique is frequently highlighted) who has lessons to learn. His father Odin banishes him to earth so he might learn a few things and of course does from the perky and brainy Portman. The film is all about the action sequences which are spectacular in IMAX 3D.

The Adjustment Bureau

Here is the news - free will ended with the Cuban Missile Crisis but if we want free will enough the Chairman may restore it to us selectively. Matt Damon and Emily Blunt star in this mess. They are not supposed to meet but do, so their “plans” won’t work as intended. The Adjustment Bureau is then sent out to adjust their lives to get the plan back on track. Watch out for men wearing hats because the hats allow them to pass through doors into different places and adjust our lives. The film’s premise is just so silly that it ruins the considerable chemistry between Damon and Blunt. Maybe someday the two of them will make a good film together.

In a season of so-so movies, finally one that made me laugh out loud. Wahlberg and Farrell are good foils for one another. Eva Mendes is perfect as the alluring wife. The Prius will never again be seen as utilitarian green-car.

An animated triumph of 3D visuals with a great story. Hiccup is a young Viking whose village is plagued by marauding dragons. The villagers are obsessed fighting the dragons. Hiccup is a sensitive boy who does not fit the mold of the tough Viking fighter. Through cleverness he is able to capture the most elusive dragon of all, a Night Fury. He befriends the Night Fury and learns the ways of the dragons. His knowledge is not appreciated by the village elders, but a young girl dragon fighter, Astrid, sees his special talents. Together they triumph over ignorance and form an alliance that wins the day. The characters are lovable and well done. This film will sure be a family classic.

Julie & Julia

A simply wonderful movie. Meryl Streep is Julia Child. The quivering voice, the manic love of cooking and her trademark stoicism in the face of culinary mishaps are so well done that we think Julia is back with us treating us to another memorable feast. Her struggles to publish her cookbook in the face of stodgy publishers are focused on as she triumphs in the face of adversity. With this backdrop, a modern women Julie (played perfectly by Amy Adams) has her own mountains to climb and decides to write a blog as she cooks all of Julia’s recipes in 365 days. Her blog catches on and she becomes an internet sensation. The back and forth stories of these two women seeking a special place in the world is charming and great fun to watch.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

The lovable creatures are back for another adventure. This time they wander into a new world under the ice where dinosaurs roam and they have to contend with dangerous lizards, especially one called Rudy. Ray Romano is Manny the Mammoth, Queen Latifah voices Ellie the Mammoth who is pregnant and gives birth; John Leguizamo is Sid, Denis Leary is Diego the aging tiger, and Simon Pegg is Buck who leads them through the world of dinosaurs. This is a cartoon aimed at kids. There are a couple of adult level jokes, but enough cuteness to keep the adults barely smiling too. Rated PG for a bit of crude humor.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. Too long, too loud and eventually quite tedious. Fans of watching the AutoBots battle the Decepticons will get more than their full of endless fight scenes as the transformers transform, morph and blow one another up over and over again. Somewhere in all of this there is some story that lands them at the Pyramids and Petra as they search for the magic resurrection device. Shia LeBeouf is back as Sam but more importantly Megan Fox gives us ample opportunity to appreciate her charms. Rated PG-13 for language and non-stop violence.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
