A film gem that makes one yearn to see it performed on the stage. It would be ideal. I could go on endlessly praising the film. However, I'll leave that to others, of whom are legion. I will offer, however, a few nits. I did have a problem with Wallis Simpson being portrayed as common, and perhaps a bit slutty. Also, the film may have defied reality by representing David, Edward VII, as being intelligent and sensitive. Actually, he was a dolt.
This is much darker and sexier than was the TV Granada version. It is not just a remake. Sebastion is now portrayed as a very sweet but terminally and internally tortured soul. He is not the effete snob of the TV program. As in both versions the religious aspect is riveting and extremely moving. But it leaves me with the preference to sing with the sinners rather than be silent with the saints.
