I can see how this movie might not appeal to anti-semites. But for those of us of the chosen ones, and more to the point, downtrodden chosen ones who's roots stretch back to the same shtetls and hardships, this is a great tale of a triumphant man who created a voice for a voiceless people.
I grew up hearing Yiddish at home and can understand it more or less, but had heard Sholem Aleichem's name many times in my youth. A big fan of Fiddler on the Roof, when I heard about this movie, I decided to take my mom.
It offers a great little history lesson for those of us who don't know the tales of this part of our family trees, but it does it very well without being dull or dry (as the other reviewer claimed). Its filled with anecdotes and stories of the man (told by historians and his own granddaughter) and teaches us why our bubbies and babushkas talk as they do. I found it very entertaining... especially the bits about Sholem's (and the parallels in his character, Menakhem Mendl's) stock market adventures.
The movie keeps you guessing and wondering whats going to happen next. The effects and CGI are awesome and the cast is great. Leonardo DiCaprio is in top form. Ellen Page and Marion Cotillard are each fun to watch and bring something special to their individual rolls, and in turn makes the movie better on the whole - the casting is excellent. Its a very unique story and is great escapism entertainment.
It won't FEEL like 2.5 hours. Christopher Nolan has delivered again, this might be better than Batman: The Dark Knight.
