Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg have such easy chemistry and that makes every "small" scene between them delightful. I was put off by how much violence was in the movie but the story and the great dialogue really kept me involved throughout. Edward James Olmos was the best of the supporting actors.
Credit the young writer/director for showing us what happens in the end at the beginning of the movie and then keeping up the interest and suspense throughout. Most people in our theatre reacted emotionally to the ending. The actors were very good but I keep going back to the writer/director because he kept us right inside the story, up close and personal. I mean that in a good way.
Pros well paced, great story, socially responsible, very moving
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Negative Reviews are WRONG!

I had to be dragged to see this after reading several bad reviews and was so delighted with the movie. Christina Aguilera loosened up after the first few scenes and was just darling. Stanley Tucci was perfect. Cher was so sweet and funny in her scenes with both of them. This is not in the "Glitter" and "Showgirls" category at all. It's really good. I'd say it's just a notch below "Chicago." The costumes should get an academy award!
All the actors are good in this, especially Ed Harris--a wonderfully textured character honestly portrayed. Renee Zellwegger is fine in a complex, not entirely likeable role. Great casting in smaller parts. Watch especially for the Judge in the trial--he was so good in a small part. The pace of this movie is slow but the story is worth it. Production values are all high. Some violence but none that's gratuitous.
Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges really make this fine script work--They aren't cartoon characters, they are real people. Great action sequences, pacing, direction. A fun ride overall.
