Gods to the Rescue

Diane's divine interventions may seem laughable to us, but the whole opera succeeded, in my estimation, in establishing the sense of helplessness everyone felt then (and now?). Repetition, claustrophobic scenery, ritual dances and movement (I loved these!), expressive chorus members, and (especially) the poignant, well-grounded portrayal of the central characters conveyed this: Tragedy, not just of the moment, but over time. One had to feel empathy for them all (even for the Scythian king, Thoas).
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A challenging feat well done

It has been two weeks since I saw the encore production. That gave me time to re-read OPERA NEWS, as to the change in directors, and more about the singers. All that just deepened my sense about the producer's intention: Focus on the characters. The massive crowd with its individual features fascinated me - as Russia is itself so multifaceted, yet united at a profound level, like the bass voices. The huge history book gave continuity and perspective to the story. Rene Pape himself was multifaceted - crazy, then tender, empathetic then dismissive. I didn't get the staging of the Polish episode, but didn't care. Superb opera, well done. Thank you, dear Met!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Here we have a 19th-century opera dressed in period costumes of another century and sets that move around like huge ghosts contemporary duds for Hamlet and his buddies.
Particularly enjoyed the banquet fiasco, though it got a little too bloody-ugly for comfort at the end of the scene. Choreography was fabulous for the outrageous play mocking the new king, and effective in the opening scene with the dark chorus and queenly Gertrude.
Another winner for HD which shows off the cast's nuanced acting to such advantage.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you didn't get to see this performance last Saturday, clear your calendar for January 7. What a chance to hear and see Renee Fleming up close and gorgeous! Kudos to the Met for bringing this seldom performed and very worthy opera to us in this meaningful way.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
