I didn't read the books, so my opinion is based solely on the movie itself. This movie was darker themed all around and a little slow in the beginning, but great as usual. It felt more as if it was a connector piece to the next film, not to stand on it's own. I missed the whimsical things, such as the moving staircases and talking pictures on the walls.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
