I am 39 and a married dad of a 16 yo girl and a 12 yo boy. Our whole family saw this at the Premire and we loved it. We didn't like that some of the story (from the book) wasn't well discussed, such as "her" lullaby, but the rest was great. I have read the books, as has my daughter, and my son is working on them. We all thought that it was great, even my wife. However, she did not get some of the "back stories" because of not knowing the books. it is still a great film even without reading the books, but it is that much better with the full experience of all of the text.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
