Being a devout fan of the Harry Potter series written by Rowling, I have to admit that this movie was a let down. I think too much emphasis was placed on "being funny" and the various teen relationships involved than on the actual story line. Key ingredients from the book were left out, while other bits of the movie were completely fabricated (*spoiler alert - since when did the Burrow burn down in the book?). I was really hoping for more...
I've read the reviews citing both sides of the coin, but being an AVID Star Trek fan myself, I am somewhat mystified by fans of the genre saying that the movie does "Trek" injustice.
The casting/acting are amazing. I was blown away with how similar the new versions of our favorite characters are to their predecessors. I also enjoyed learning where the characters came from "before" Starfleet. *spoiler alert* The plot completely deviates from the original show, thus basically "erasing" the Trek timeline we know, but I was VERY excited by this. It opens up a whole new prospect of where the show - and subsequent variations - can go. Writers and fans can start exploring all over again, not knowing what's going to come in the future.
This was an action-packed movie with great fight scenes and decent special effects. However, the story line is incongruous in places with the X-Men trilogy predating it. This origins movie felt a bit rushed, with pieces of the plot not matching previous story lines. Overall, not a bad movie, but not a fluid transition from the previous movies.
