We were looking for a movie that my mom and we would enjoy, and Sparkle fit the bill. Whereas the story is familiar and dialogue is OK, it held our interest. We especially enjoyed the musical numbers.
Pros well paced, great actors
Cons very predictable

I liked several of the performances and there were some good moments in the film; unfortunately the strength of the plot & script didn't match the strength of the cast. This is another movie with a good concept that uses too many semi-believable contrivances to forward the plot. Also, in this day & age of sexting, it's a bit irresponsible to imply that the 17 yr. old girl gives the 13 yr. old boy inappropriate photos of herself (we don't actually see the photos; based on what happened earlier in the film, we are led to believe that that's what she gives him). If I were to recommend it, I would do so with some qualifiers.

Enjoyable for the most part

Several folks had favorable things to say about "Thor" so we decided to see it. Since it is based on a comic book character, there are certain plot points that one must accept, which we did gladly. That said, some of the dialogue was a bit trite and cheesy, however we still enjoyed the movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
