Enjoyable but not necessarily worth premium ticket prices. Very restrained performances from both Jolie and Depp. Good supporting role for Paul Bettany. A few plot twists but nothing that wasn't predictable half way through the movie. On a side note, I had forgotten what Johnnie Depp's eyes looked like without manliner.
Being a fan of all the books, I'm glad they're taking the time to follow the plot through the first half of Deathly Hallows. However, a movie based on the first half of a book where the climactic action is yet to happen is guaranteed to be less fulfilling. This Potter film is like Star Wars V where the entire purpose is to set up the next adventure. They make no apologies to anyone who might not be familiar with the other movies so don't bother taking a Potter novice to this one, they'll be very lost and over their heads.
I saw this movie with people who either could quote the books chapter and verse, or had never read them. All were a bit disappointed, but the devout Potter fans particularly so. The deviation from the book ending was particularly disappointing because the final fight scenes in Hogwarts were eliminated. The story line jumped around so much, the non Potters had difficulty following it. I disliked the washed out cinematography. The approach to adolescent infatuations was fun but the rest of the movie was pretty bland.
A great Pixar animation but aimed as much at adults. Our group of 5 adults had laugh-out-loud moments (particularly the homage to dogs playing poker) as well as some surreptitious tear wiping. I've never seen so many unique uses of a quad cane. Take your grandparents!
Considering this is a very long complex book (21 hours by audiobook), they did an excellent job adapting it for the screen. A few minor deviations in the ending but nothing of significance. Good escapist summer fun. It's not going to challenge you mentally or emotionally but that's about perfect for this time of the year. Go and just enjoy without being bogged down by reality.
Valkyrie did a very good job keeping suspense for a plot line with a known historical outcome. They also followed known historical features of the assassination plot well. Great British and Australian cast, all playing Germans, and the English accent was easier to accept than the flat American one of Tom Cruise -- kind of like Kevin Costner doing Robin Hood. Fortunately, Tom Cruise's acting was fine.
