I enjoyed "The Rum Diary" because it did a good job of setting a tone and creating its own vibe. Although, I can see how people who are more familiar with Johnny Depp through the "Pirates" movies might find the film slow and pointless. It's not a mainstream type of film. If you liked "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" then I think you'll like "The Rum Diary." Michael Rispoli particularly stands out in a wonderfully organic performance that still maintains the appropriate level of zaniness and surprise. I think the film is worth it for his performance alone. I felt the movie successfully captured how life experiences helped this writer find his voice and that is really the key here. "The Rum Diary" is a film more about feeling and experiencing than it is about sitting back and being mindlessly assaulted by non-stop action.
If you are willing to just go with the film and the characters, you'll get something out of it. However, if you want a purely plot driven film with loads of action that unfolds formulaically, then "The Rum Diary" isn't for you.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was the best Pirates of the series because there were no boring parts with extraneous characters. Capt. Jack was front and center where he should be. It was a thoroughly fun and entertaining film and since that is what it set out to be, it succeeded.
SATC 2 is a fun, breezy and fabulous film that marks a return to the tone of the series. I was disappointed with the first movie because I felt it deviated too much from what made the series so much fun to watch. SATC 2 was the movie the first should have been. The clothes were exciting and fun and the ladies had a joy that filled the screen. The 2 hour 27 minute running time felt like 90 minutes--terrifically paced.
I loved the film so this was a terrific way to spend an afternoon at the cinema.
