Visually and in storytelling, this movie was lovely. All it needed for a fifth star was the kind of memorable music Disney used to have. They wove the different threads of New Orleans culture - historical and fictional - into a rich world that unfolded like the pages of a book and had delightful characters running through it.
I appreciate the Christian mom's concern about voodoo elements (take care with little ones because it is frightening in a realer way than some other Disney films), but the movie is hardly un-Christian. The demonic is rejected in favor of what is really meaningful. There is vivid and true imagery of blessings as well as curses, and I left surprisingly haunted by "Evangeline."
