Jolie is good. She does an admirable job as an agent under attack. She jumps! She alludes her pursuers. She kicks! She shoots! She punches and hits and blocks and stabs and runs and tumbles and you look at her and wonder would somebody that petite be able to devastate that many men? Not really but its fun watching her for 100 minutes doing it.
What bothers me about movies like 2012 is, while spectacular special effects abound, it makes me think who the heck would want to survive? As in the other Roland Emmerich blockbusters they end before the gruesome and arduous time to get back to something resembling normal. Almost everybody dies in this movie and the few that survive will have to try and rebuild. Recovery the day after 2012 seems very unlikely and not much fun. Just the feel good pick-me-up the country needs!
I found the movie to be a tough, gritty and well edited film. It is very adeptly directed by Ms Bigelow but I agree with Time critic, Richard Corliss, that is is a near-perfect film. There is a constant building of tension and anticipation to a flat-lined climax. Yes, bomb diffusers are crazy a lot, we get that, but this film doesn't tell you why or worse care.
It's is a fanboy movie unlike Star Wars or Terminator it required an explanation in order to get a novice acclimated. It was a fairly faithful reproduction of the novel of the same name but my wife was totally lost (and bored) having not read the book. Visually I loved it but trying to explain why scenes kept jumping back and forth in time seemed laborious. I whispered to her before the movie started, "It is supposed to take place in 1985 in an alternate universe." When I tried to explain the concept of the giant squid it made me realize how silly I must have sounded to my wife and why this movie was often referred to as unfilm-able.
I pray that this franchise doesn't jump the shark like Spiderman 3 did. It worked on all levels: great FX, great cast and had a sophisticated plot that made you think. The characters are flawed but that is what makes them believable. Of course, it is a comic book story but The X Files was able to push through those same type of story limitations and did exceptionally well-even with the restrictions of television. I can only hope IM does the same.
