Some of the worst performances ever given by child actors mar a potentially light and entertaining flick. The cuteness of the kids occassionally overcomes their stilted line delivery and steroetyped personalities. And Jackie Chan's stunt double is often fun to watch.
At its best it's a sci-fi "Dances With Wolves". but the need to cram the plot into a standard action/adventure formula leading to a ridiculous show-down with the single lead bad-guy turns all aspirations of "Avatar" firmly away from anything more than a pretty display of film making technology.
Go see it in 3-D, because why else would you want to.
If this movie is a "game-changer", then the new game is putting high-tech CGI tech over a ridiculous, intelligence-offending barrage of re-used story, stereotypical characters and clichéd plot-devices. I'd rather not play that game,
My enjoyment of this film was entirely sabotaged by the Mann's Chinese 6 building some of their theaters so that whenever someone enters or exits, the light from the lobby is cast onto the screen, obscuring the film for however long the people coming late or going out for a pee decide to hold open the door. No usher was around to help deal with the constant streams of conversation which provided a running narrative of the film, often drowning out the onscreen dialogue.
This is only the case in the four theaters located upstairs, but, until you arrive at the theater, there's no way to tell which of the six theaters a given movie is playing in. Avoid this multiplex, only go to the real Chinese Theater downstairs.
