This documentary was affecting in an unexpected way. I expected a glorified account of Pat Tillman's heroism and a villainizing of the government/military officials involved in the attempted cover-up of his cause of death. (Someone in the film mentions how the media presents news in a palatable "good guys vs bad guys" format for the public.) Yes, Pat and Kevin did do something extraordinary in enlisting as did countless other young men and women. But I especially love how the Tillmans addressed the national "claiming" of Pat as America's hero - how he was dissected and placed on a pedestal by the media to be consumed by the public. As though his sacrifice (NFL=$$) was any greater than Kevin's or any other soldiers'. And that although he had many wonderful qualities, he was not a saint. He was their son, husband, and brother, a whole REAL human being.
The most surprising revelation, however, was my opportunity to see the individual human beings behind the military machine. That no matter how high-ranking they are, they are STILL soldiers carrying out orders based on an unifying belief system. That questioning orders requires them to second guess their integrity, morality, careers, and country...in essence, their whole lives. I can't put my finger on it, but I would've liked to have gone deeper on some level - not with the family, but with other military non-platoon member interviews.
I think this is an important film and will recommend it as a "must see".
P.S. The politicians were exactly how I imagined they would be...embarassing. No spinning those clips!
Saw the original movie 5 times IN THE THEATER - loved it! Bought the midnight tix for the sequel, couldn't have been more excited.
"Urban" robots, HORRIBLE one-liners, gratuitous romantic moments, Turturro's butt...really? REALLY?! Too bad Tyrese went to the trouble of losing 35 lbs for this role. Saw him for 10 min total and he was pretty much reduced to one-liners as well.
On the upside, robots/visuals were still amazing. The movie LOOKED beautiful. High five to whoever kept Megan dewey and dirt-free in all the shots.
Overall though, super disappointing. I can't believe I lost sleep over Revenge of The Fallen.
