Is this movie funny? Absolutely. Is it the funniest movie of the year? No. That honor goes to Forgetting Sara Marshall by far. But this is still one of the better comedies of the year. I actually found Jack Black and Stiller to be too far out there for this film. They ruin the tone which is satirical but not over the top. I thought it was Downey, Jr. and Jay Baruchel who actually carried this film and provided the most laughs. In case you hadn't heard, the "breakout" star of this movie isn't even a breakout candidate: Tom Cruise. He's a revelation with his hilarious performance as a greedy, evil, movie producer...and lover of hip-hop slang. Best thing Cruise has done since Magnolia, when he once again defied his usual type.
I knew this one was in trouble once it was announced Jet Li was involved. He seems to be the go to guy for dolling up a dud of an action film. This film completely abandons the spirit of the original films by introducing us to ninja mummies. No thank you. The history and continuity that the first two films used to their advantage was completely disposed of in favor of Jet Li's boring jumpkicks and single facial expression. Brendan Fraser plays Rick well enough, although it's a bit hard to get over him having a 21 year old son while Fraser looks the same as when the franchise started. Maria Bello, whom I love, is still a step down from Rachel Weisz. Her attempts to act like she thinks Evie would act are a little distracting. Her accent is just plain bad.
Some people are saying that this version of the Hulk is what the "Ang Lee version should've been". I wonder if those people know what they're talking about. Ang Lee's film was a distinctly cerebral film. It was about more than just the Hulk smashing things, and that's what made it good. The least interesting thing about the Hulk is the Hulk himself, so it makes sense to focus on Banner's trials. This film is no different. In terms of sheer minutes given to the Hulk smashing things, it's pretty much equal. With Ed Norton added to the cast, the film upticks in acting quality clearly, but he also solidifies what worked in the first film, which was capturing Banner's deep pain and inner turmoil. This film focuses on that aspect even more with Norton's inclusion. I could've done with less Liv Tyler. They should've stuck with Jennifer Connelly who is a FAR superior actress. I also preferred Sam Elliott's Thunderbolt Ross, who more perfectly captures the grit and orneriness of the comic book Ross. A good film, but not significantly better than the original.
Not quite as funny as the original, but certainly more raunchy. Still, the sequel to White Castle shoud have everybody slapping their knees with laughter. Lord knows I certainly was. Definitely the funniest movie of the year so far.
