I could hardly breathe at the end of this movie. Eastwood really got it right this time! The character studies were amazing right down to the granddaughter. I felt mixed about the role of the priest at first. In the end he showed real growth for a "over educated 27 year old". I highly recommend this movie to everyone and how the Golden Globes missed honoring this one is a mystery to me except for the fact that the actors were relatively unknown. Eastwood did an outstanding job with each and every one of the performers in creating a powerful message. I will definitely keep this DVD on my shelf along with Crash for its powerful message.
The acting in this film is outstanding. Aside from being what I think this is an accurate depiction of some of the conflicts that must have gone on in that era, this movie is an amazing character study. I found myself wondering who the antagonist and protagonist were until the final confrontation. I guess this would qualify the plot and execution of the movie riveting. I highly recommend this movie, first, as just a darn good movie and, second, as an insight to Roman Catholic church politics and the struggle with clerical authority prior to Vatican II.
I really liked this movie. It made me laugh; which was just what I needed. The cast was well chosen and the interaction was excellent. Witherspoon was her usual unpredictable self. Vaughn did an excelent job.
In most movies of this type the directors leave out some of the details and there are gaps that leave parts of the movie disconnected. It looks like that they are trying to hurry up and finish the movie under a certain time limit. This was true of especially at the end of this movie.
