I was expecting this film to be very good, by the advertisement, but it was actually significantly better than I expected it to be. If you've been thinking, "That looks like fun!" then don't miss it, and be sure to do the full IMAX 3-D experience.
I am a big fan of Studio Ghibli's work, but I have unfortunately found a film that I'm not terribly pleased with. The story premise is great, but the execution lacks, in my opinion. A story is very flat without something to give it an edge of importance, and the complete lack of any real danger or possibility of loss to the characters steals all of the importance of the plot. I also found some of the animation to be a bit too stylistically simple for my tastes. Small children may appreciate the film, but the studio's typical ability to appeal to both children and adults didn't quite make it for me this time. Fear not, I'll be attending their next film without hesitation.
