This movie fluctuates erratically between dumb and disgusting. It is one of the few movies I have actually considered walking out of. An enormous waste of Robert Downey's talent and some good production values. It might have been funny, there were moments of possibility, but almost every time they found a way to fall short, sometimes way short. Maybe I'm just too far along to appreciate a dog masturbating. Send in the ASPCA!
It's always a pleasure to watch Russell Crowe work, and he works a little too hard in this movie. But a pleasure. On the other hand, why Liam Neeson gets top billing and, presumably, big bucks for a hammy walk-through cameo is a mystery. More angst and less sturm than I had expected. Pleasant but a little long.
I enjoyed this movie. I'd recommend it to a friend. I liked Will Ferrell. But I felt I had seen the best bits in all the trailers and promos that were everywhere. The actual movie was just okay, it moved along at a pleasant pace, the good jokes widely spaced, the 3D some of the weakest I've seen lately. Lower your expectations and you won't be disappointed.
The previews telegraph the story pretty well. Will Ferrell was, somewhat, restrained which worked very well. And Mark Wahlberg was actually very funny. All in all, an enjoyable evening.
I'm a great of nearly all the actors and the director of this movie, but the end result, while full of production values, was slow and surprisingly unengaging. Someone writing before the release asked "why another Robin Hood?" It turns out that's a great question.
lot's of superficial values: name actors, good special effects, very good cinematography and mood. But oddly despite some frenetic activity, nothing much happens. Certainly no plot that leads anywhere, and not much dialogue or anticipation. It just rolls along like a slightly prettier but less scary remake of the original. See it, but don't expect too much.
In our group of five there was a full spectrum of reactions: A 24 year-old who had loved the book as a child hated the movie; A mom who had loved the book from reading it to the 24 year-old loved it; A 22 year-old who didn't remember the book very well was mildly positive about the movie; An unrelated 25 year-old man liked the dirt-clod fights; I alternated between liking it (costumes, acting, editing) and not liking it (dark, depressing, hopeless). Maybe it's a Rorschach test for how you feel about your own childhood.
