Hollywood and critics hated this movie. Check out the ratings of actual movie-goers, see the rave reviews (including mine), and make up your OWN mind.
This may be the strongest female lead ever written, and I for one am relieved she wasn't ruined by Holllywood casting. This is an independent film, so the filmmakers were not forced to pander and make the very REALISTICLY strong character of a woman leading in a male dominated world into a warm and sweet puffy lipped bubble-headed bombshell. And guess what? She is sexier than those weaklings by far!
In fact this is a brazen presentation of the characters from the book, and you won't find a single superstar in it to distract you from this compelling story.
It is based on one of the most famous books in modern history, and it is not just a literary drama, it is sci-fi, apocalypitic horror, fantasy, and philosopy. The fact that so many of the futuristic facts of this movie are playing out in our economy and our politics TODAY makes me wonder if Ayn Rand knew she was writing prophesy so long ago.
Unfortunately, we hard-working individualist thinkers don't have a "John Galt" to come to our rescue...or at least he hasn't shown his name, yet.
Bravi to the producer and director for sticking to the story.
As I sat at the end crying for a house-elf, it occurred to me how terrific the storytelling and the effects were to make me feel such a connection with a story that we knew before we walked in. People of all ages and backgrounds enjoyed the movie together through laughter, intensity, and tears. Performances, effects, and story passed the tension, fear, and glimmers of hope to the audience that carry through this story.
Being a fan of early depictions, I was sure I would not like this movie but was surprised. There are aspects of the character that I felt sure would be exploited and offensive, but instead were crafted well into the story line. The previews led me to believe it would also be stuffed with contrived action ala Indiana Jones, but even that was unexpectedly well suited to the story. I can stil name 20 actors (most of them actually British) that I would have cast in the lead before Robert Downey Jr., but he was acceptable and only distracted from the story in a few minor moments. Overall a good movie.
