Meryl Streep IS the Iron Lady, and turns in a magnificent performance. That's what earned the three stars I gave this film. The rest of the movie spent too much time on the portrayal of her as a doddering old woman speaking with her dead husband. I also felt there was too much bias against her, with all the riot scenes. They did happen, but I think too much time was allotted to them. I was in the UK during her tenure as PM, and met some hardcore unemployed who told me her actions were harsh, but very necessary.
SEE THIS MOVIE, even if you are not religious or spiritual! I will see this movie again and again. As a result of this film, I plan to walk at least the required part of the Camino (100 km) for my 60th birthday in 2013, and will buy the DVD when it comes out. The spiritual journey Sheen's character takes is very deep, and yet has humor, frankness about the difficulties, and a good balance between beautiful Spanish landscapes and fleabag hostels along the way. The fellow travelers reflect the goodness and tragedies most of us face in this life. The acting is superb! Definitely Oscarworthy! GO SEE IT!!!!
Took my two daughters, ages 25 and 18, for a girls night out at the movies and it was great! Streep really nailed her character, and while Amy Adams did well with Julie, it was Julia who we really wanted to know more about. Super for my younger girl who has dreams of being a novelist as well as the older one, who is learning to cook. Lots of fun, but also lots of thought.. A great evening with my girls, plus more fun looking at my own first edition of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" when we returned home.
Pros: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, the little boy playing Nallah, and all the other actors are great. Super cinematography? Check. Meaty story? Check. Interesting historical context? Check. Riveting drama? Check. I kept thinking this was the Aussie Gone With The Wind.
Con: Too long to go without a brief intermission. Even Gone With The Wind had one.
My recommendation? By all means, see this movie, and by all means, visit the restroom prior to sitting and viewing it!
Although I am not a Keira Knightley fan ( she relies too much on puffing out her lips, occasionally mumbling and she's way too thin) she does a credible job here. Ralph Fiennes is great as her menacing hubby and Hayley Atwell (from Brideshead Revisited) is super as the cohabiting friend of both. The story is fascinating, not only because it portrays interesting times and has gorgeous scenes, but the development of the relationships is bizarre too, not always what you expect... Interesting that Georgina, "The Duchess," is a direct ancestor of Princess Diana, and how their husbands' power affects their lives.
A true "cheerer-upper" of a film (we'd had a horrible week), which made us laugh lots. Yes, parts of this movie are very silly, but it's all so fun. Amanda Seyfried is excellent, and this should be the breakout role for her; she can sing, dance, and act. The biggest surprise is that Meryl Streep can really sing. The scenes of the Greek islands made me want to hop the pond again as soon as I can because they were so beautiful. And much of the audience was singing along with the movie. And who can resist the music of ABBA?
LOVED this movie! It is the ultimate for any SATC fan! Can't say enough about how satisfying it was for this faithful fan.
Only two caveats--- we did not need to see Sam's next door neighbor's endowment or Miranda's full frontal with Steve bringing up the rear at the very end, and I would have liked more story development with Charlotte.
