This is, by far, the best Batman film ever made, and I would even go further to say that it is probably the best superhero movie of any sort ever made. This film transcends the superhero genre. Essentially, it is not about Batman. Rather, it is about all of us, about the nature of evil, and about what it takes to be a hero in the modern world. In these tough times for America, Christopher Nolan's film manages to perfectly capture the pessimistic tone of contemporary American society while still offering us some hope. Aside from the film's main themes, the acting is simply superb. Heath Ledger delivers a truly Oscar-worthy performance. There are few instances when it is even possible to tell who the actor is under the makeup. He has created one of the most terrifying villains ever to grace the screen and he has done it so perfectly that he almost entirely disappears into the character. Aaron Eckhart is also superb as Harvey Dent. Wonderfully faithful to Loeb and Sale's graphic novels, the origin of Two-Face is done perfectly by Eckhart. All in all, this movie is one that I would see over and over again, because of its excellent take on American society and for the dazzling, screen-stealing performances of Ledger and Eckhart. Truly amazing.
Moviegoers can always count on Pixar to deliver in splendid form. From Toy Story to Ratatouille, they give us films that delight and enchant, films with wonderful plots, beautiful animation, empathetic characters, and heartwarming stories. But with WALL*E, they've given us something more. This film has all of those things we've come to expect and love about Pixar films, but on top of that, it gives us an experience. The breathtaking animation and the brilliantly designed characters and story take the audience wholly into WALL*E's world; we feel for him as we've never felt for any other animated character. In addition to the primary narrative, this film works on many more levels than Pixar has ever attempted. It is simultaneously an ecological parable, a social critique, a tribute to human ingenuity, a (darn good) sci-fi drama, an action flick, and a love story. On all these levels, WALL*E operates flawlessly. Prepare to be amazed.
