Even though you'd think the vampire genre is tired and exhausted, the Spierig brothers manage to pull some interesting allegory from it by fast-forwarding 10 years after a vampire apocalypse has turned humans into an endangered species. Perhaps not surprisingly, a future predominantly filled with vampires looks a lot like our own possible future, and so this isn't really just a story about bloodsuckers, but our own human addictions as well. That said, the film functions mainly as a sci-fi actioner, with a car chase, gun fights and enough exploding vampires to keep you entertained. Fans of Underworld and I Am Legend take note. If you can get into the high concept, you will probably enjoy this film.
While QT's films have always been about films in one way or another, IB takes that theme and makes it the centerpiece of one of the most wildly feverish 3rd acts ever put to film. That's not to say the rest of the film is not as good. The opening scene sets up this dark fairy tale with some of the best dialog he’s ever written. This is old-school filmmaking at its finest. More concerned with shot composition and tense pacing than hyperactive editing, IB is vintage QT (its arguably his most personal film yet,) not a modern-era WW2 film. It isn't until the end, when all of the pieces have moved into place that IB makes the explicit argument that onscreen violence can be a cathartic way to engage our deepest, most ill-gotten fantasies.
I'm coming from the place of a Trek fan from back in the day. Grew up watching TNG and got into TOS more recently. So while I was dreading this reboot, I recognized that the franchise was in desperate need of new blood and energy. And this film pretty much delivers. Stak Trek 2009 might not have been written with any big ideas or written very well (lots of convenient coincidences), but it is a blast to watch and the cast absolutely nail their parts. J.J. Abrams focused on building the characters and the action, and in that regard he succeeded. This Trek is exciting, funny, and breathlessly paced.
