Visually stunning, but...

As a person who saw the original "Tron" - in the movie theater I might add - I was eagerly anticipating this sequel. While it was a visual masterpiece and the musical score added depth to it, the story was a little confusing for people who do not work in technology.
I brought my 12 year old daughter and she stated more than once she liked it, but couldn't quite understand a lot of the symbolism or dialogue of the film. She was more drawn to the special effects (the light cycle scenes made me want to run out and buy a motorcycle!). *SPOILER* I had to explain that Flynn was a programmer/creator/GOD and that Clu was Antivirus/Master Code/Hitler/DEVIL and how there was a lot of artificial intelligence and philosophy/religion intertwined in the plot. She would understand a lot more on the second viewing and when she gets older. BTW, who says you have to add a flamboyant British guy to a film to move the plot along? Annoying Iggy Pop/Mick Jagger character that made me think "programs" that go rogue wanted to be rock stars in their infancy. When you see the movie, you'll understand that last sentence.
They left the film open for a sequel, but the story will have to get better the next go round. Children under 11 might get bored on the non-action scenes. Make sure you see this in IMAX 3D. Well worth the ticket price!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Director issues? Uh, no!

I read somewhere on a fansite people were not exactly happy with the choice of director for this movie. I don't know what they were thinking. The movie was excellent, especially viewing it in IMAX. It made me realize I have to read the book again as I was entertained even though I had a vague recollection of some parts. It did seem to drag for a little towards the end, but it got going with another intense action scene. It ended on the perfect note to let you know that part two is going to be amazing.
I took my 12 year old daughter and was telling her that one could tell this movie was supposed to be in 3D; I'm glad it wasn't. Parents might want to think twice about kids under 9. Just like the books, it doesn't spare reality and the prospect of death.
The action scenes were excellent and it is amazing to see the characters grow onscreen as they have in the books. Even though we know what happens, we can't wait for the second part.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Will Ferrell at his best...

*MAY INCLUDE SPOILERS*
Will Ferrell made this movie for me. Tina Fey was excellent as well. And Jonah Hill was believable as a villain. Was disappointed Brad Pitt didn't have more to do as he has shown he can be extremely funny.
For all the parents, there is a hilarious reference to the original "Superman" with Christopher Reeve. My daughter couldn't figure out what I was laughing at until I told her. This movie was a pleasant surprise and recommend it to all.

Money chages everything...

I saw the trailer for the movie about two months ago and was intrigued. As the release date drew closer and the positive reviews kept pouring in, I knew I had to go see this movie.
I was not disappointed. I loved Aaron Sorkin's screenplay. The dialogue was swift and entertaining. The characters constantly jousted with one another. The lead actors were excellent. Andrew Garfield should be nominated for Best Supporting as his character seemed to be the conscience and emotional center of the movie. Since I could only imagine myself in that world of sharks, his point of view was the most genuine. That being said, the movie lets the viewer decide who to believe.
In any event, I took my twelve year old with me. While there was some imagery that was adult in nature, the movie was ok for kids twelve and older. Younger than that, they may get lost with the dialogue. I asked her who she believed and she couldn't make up her mind. But she did say that Zuckerberg seemed to be capable of anything. I think that was the point of telling the story. Awesome and will definitely buy the DVD...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Companion to "Scarlet Letter" for HS Teachers

I took my twelve year old daughter to see this movie. While some of the language and images made me squirm with her sitting there next to me, I'm glad she was able to see the underlying message: If you present yourself as being "easy", even if it is a lie, that's all people will think of you.
Emma Stone was perfect in that role and she portrayed a young lady who was smart, strong, and beautiful to my daughter. Couldn't ask for anything more from movies targeting my tween. Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson were excellent as well.
Although this is a movie for contemporary audiences, I'm sure many HS teachers will use it in tandem with Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter." The themes will translate better with today's ADHD, instant gratification kid.
Parents: use your judgment if thinking of taking children under 12. There are some topics in the movie that are clearly mature. I'm lucky I have the type of kid that can handle some of this imagery and keep it in perspective. Not all kids are like that.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Dancing was INCREDIBLE!!!

As with all dance movies ("Breakin'" and "Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo" anyone?), the plot is really secondary to the dancing. No surprise with SU3D. Very corny plot with incredibly corny lines. However, the dance scenes were amazing! As I told my 12 year old daughter, break dancing started with my generation but her's has taken it to another level. I watch a lot of dance shows and youtube videos featuring LXD (League of Extraordinary Dancers) and many of them were in the movie. The first battle has an awesome robot scene. Adam Sevani ("Moose") took it to another level from SU2. He pulled off some incredible moves and IMO, he does the best Michael Jackson.
Adults: suspend reality for the not-so-good plot. The dancing is the real star of this movie. If you can, spend the money on the 3D.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Did everyone have to overact?

What a disappointment! There were so many stars in this movie who either overacted or underacted. The story could have been so much better if the producers didn't rely on stereotypical characters and plot devices. There were some parts that were unintentionally funny where I was laughing out loud.
Clearly from the tone and direction of the movie the producers want to make a franchise as there are five books. My advice to producers that want to make sequels from book series: don't worry so much about the sequels if the first one stinks.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Movie for grown ups

Besides the fact that he's George Clooney and most guys have a man crush, I identified with where his character is in his life, especially as someone who traveled for work the last seven years. Not nearly as much as Clooney's character, but enough to where I knew the genesis of his travel tips.
Spoiler Alert: they actually made the female lead the bad guy in this one. A welcome change not because I don't like women but because it showed that everyone is capable of high pitched infidelity.
All in all, it was worthy of it's high praise. The older female lead, Vera Farmiga, deserves some Oscar consideration. Great chemistry with Clooney.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Only way to see this is in IMAX 3D...

This movie is unlike anything you've ever seen. I won't give anything away here because most of the themes and outcomes are pretty obvious. But the visual aspects can only be described by seeing the movie for yourself. It is probably the best movie I've seen in the last ten years. It's popcorn/blockbuster, drama, adventure, and love story all rolled into one. My daughter, who is quite skeptical of event movies ("The Dark Knight"), was blown away. You have to see it in IMAX 3D. Cameron's years of working with IMAX on undersea movies shows. Two epics, two winners. Jim Cameron's my guy for epics.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Could have been better...

I saw this Friday night with my 11 year-old daughter. She's read the first two books and was eager to see this movie. While she is too young to recognize the obvious targeting of the teen demographic with Jacob shirtless through half of the movie, she was complaining that she was bored. She loves the books but could probably do without the movies. I'm guessing it has to do with imagining the story with your own vision as opposed to watching the director's cut. In any event, it was okay for the preteens. For adults, there are worse movies out there. I'm sure the adults can find something entertaining about it, but there probably wouldn't be a consensus on what that "it" is.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
