I am hoping this is the last Batman film. Don’t misunderstand, I love the franchise and any chance to get Bale, Caine, Oldman and Freeman together again. However, Christopher Nolan has done something special with this series and I don’t think he can successfully repeat it with a third film. This film is dark. I would venture Kubrick dark. In fact, Kubrick would probably say this film is too dark for his own taste. And that’s why the “new spin” succeeds. Even the original Keaton movies had a bit of the cheesy George Clooney feel at times. This Batman is real. You see the physical and emotional pain of the hero. And with the ride this one takes, a 3rd film cannot top it. Batman has met his deadliest foe. Do you seriously think he’ll be scared of the Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Egghead, King Tut and even Catwoman after this?
Ledger's performance lives up to the hype. I think he'll be nomminated for every award, but he won't win the Oscar. I think he would have, though, if he were still alive. Eckhart also deserves props for his work, too. The transformation from the White Knight of Gotham to Two Face was seamless. In fact, this movie's writing, direction and editing should all receive Oscar consideration. Rarely do you see 4 hours of exposition in 2 1/2 hours. I am looking forward to seeing it again in the IMAX format.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
