The film managed to do justice and pay homage to the comic book genre, while at the same time being totally original in its execution of the classic themes.
Even more impressive the violence, while somewhat unrealistic by the end, has very realistic consequences (e.g. getting stabbed once takes one of the kids totally out of the fight).
Finally, the story actually delivers up more than just violence-masturbation, it also manages to include a moving message about growing up, comradeship, and the loneliness of being young (almost like a John Hughes movie, only with guns and blood).
Oh boy... That's my new name for this film. On the one hand, it was nice to return to this universe which somehow blends cute with horror to some good effect, but unfortunately for Hellboy II, the blend was more overdone than not. The makeup in certain scenes was -sigh- horrifically bad, and that combined with the hyperkinetic "why aren't you tired yet?" fighting style of the bad guy had me a bit disappointed. The movie could have been awesome, the plot would really have worked with better execution, and most of it is visually pleasing, but sadly it fell flat on its red face. The first movie was a must own, this one is a must not. The best redeeming quality? Since I saw it with my girlfriend I got to look at something beautiful after the lights came on.
