Transformers times 2

In his second installment of what will obviously be an ongoing franchise, action director Michael Bay has opted for a full out CGI experience of robots at war. Shia LaBeouf is starting to look grown up and Megan Fox is as hot as ever. It doesn't even matter what the plot is here or how weak the dialog may be because this movie is all about Big Screen fast moving action, action, action. And Bay delivers big time on that. I saw it in a huge theater and the audience actually applauded at the end. This isn't art house cinema, its a popcorn chomping movie and it works on that level.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Public Enemies -good but drags

Both Michael Mann and Johnny Depp have made better films. The best moments are the action scenes, but even there the use of HD video gives you the feeling that you are not watching film, and are watching tv. Its weird.
The characters are never developed and fleshed out with their back stories. The cowboy lawman who shoots Depp could have been far more interesting and important if you had just a hint of who he was.
That said, I still would recommend the film. Depp makes Dillinger a dapper Dan who delights in chivalry and kills without remorse. Its hard to tell who Mann feels the hero of the film is. But it is compelling.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

"The Proposal" is a great classic comedy

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds make a great madcap love story in the classic 1940s mold. Its a story of role reversal and recognition. Sandra plays the tough boss who finds she must marry or be deported and makes a deal with her assistant Ryan to promote him and his book if he does. From there the story is predictable but the acting and directing make it totally enjoyable throughout. Betty White is a hoot as the 90 year old Grandma. Its a gentle romantic laugh fest with lots of funny sight gags and awkward situations.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sick, twisted, wrong, and very funny -The Hangover

A well told sick and twisted tale of four very different guys who go to Vegas for a Bachelor Party and wake up with no memory and no Doug - the guy getting married! Their mission is to figure out what happened and find him. The director has a great sense of comedic timing that can take you by surprise again and again to a very wrong place. The sight gags are great as are the actors working as a fine tuned ensemble. The end credits are impossible to read because you are totally distracted by the photo montage of their night out, and its hysterical. If you didn't love Animal House don't even bother to see this!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Up is a wonderful!

This is the story of an older man who finally goes on his life's childhood adventure thanks to a ton of balloons tied to his house. He finds himself burdened with a stowaway boy "scout" trying to do a good deed for a senior.
The first third of the film is a mostly silent bio story which sets the stage for this adventure. Ed Asner is the perfect curmudgeon with a voice full of bitterness and tenderness. His life with his sweetheart is wonderfully told.
The talking dogs are just great! See this in 3D if you can.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Lost movie, very lost

I didn't expect a whole lot when I went in to see Land of the Lost and sure enough, my expectations were met. The humor is very weak as are the special effects, story, acting, and directing. Don't get me wrong, its not horrible, but its the kind of movie you might catch on cable tv when you're stuck in the house on a snow day afternoon and have few other options. There are a few laughs here and there but not enough to sustain this poor attempt at reworking a mediocre old tv show.
My advice is to skip this in the theaters and wait for that snow day when you won't feel bad about wasting money on this dog.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Scary, gross, funny Sam Raimi film

If you've ever seen one of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films you know what you're in for. Expect to jump in your seat and be totally grossed out the next second as you have to laugh at the insane action going on. While you think its another B movie, something tells you its much more. Its not the actors that count its the action. And the action takes you to unexpected places again and again with scenes that are so wrong that they make you squirm, but leave you wanting more. At times you think its not horror at all and maybe its all played for the laughs.
The old Gypsy woman makes this movie work. She is totally repulsive! Who would have thought that an old lady with false teeth could scare you this much!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Action and back story

If you are an X-Men fanatic, expect some liberties with details, but also expect a great film! This is the story of Wolverine and Sabertooth, where they came from and why they are the way the are. It ends where the first X-Men movie began.
There are many small roles and scenes that are wonderfully played, that add to the intricate weave of this tale of brothers and of their bond.
Liev Schreiber brings his powerful presence to a roll that was all but lost in the first film of the series. He brings depth to the roll and never ceases to surprise us. For that matter, this film is full of surprises, so don't leave when you think its over...its not!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

T4, better B4

I've seen all the Terminator films and liked them. Of course the first was the best. Now we're far down the road in sequel land and McG is no James Cameron. Its not a bad movie, but its lacking in self mocking humor and real suspense. The action is continuous and the CGI is interesting with the introduction of new killing machines.
As in the Dark Night, Christian Bale is again overshadowed by a supporting actor, Sam Worthington. Anton Yelchin who was terrific in Star Trek is ok as the teenage Kyle.
You leave the theater thinking it was exciting, but it could have been more. In spite of it all, when the next one comes out, I'll be back.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Star Trek - begins all over!

J.J. Abrams has remade this old series using both poetic license and homage. The excitement level is at warp five throughout and for those who have been loyal trekies there are plenty of Easter eggs to tickle your fancy. Better still, if you are new to Star Trek, you're in for a thrill here. The cast is excellent and the way they are assembled to tell the story behind the story weaves a seemless tapestry explaining the backstory that gives this new version a sense of purpose. Sure you have to suspend your disbelief and accept a lot of questionable elements, but if you are willing, its well worth the effort. As the commercials say, "its not your father's Star Trek." Its more, much more! I can't wait for the next installment.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
