Spying Travolta style in France is how they say? A Royale with cheese. Wink, wink.
Unlike Luc Besson's last film "Taken", there is much more of a sense of humor to break up the non-stop action. The story is simple. A low level diplomatic corp assistant aspires to be a spy and suddenly not only gets his chance but finds himself in the center of the intrigue with a very over the top James Bond character.
The story is secondary to the choreography of the fight scenes done to perfection. The pacing is breathtaking. You'll enjoy this if you like action films.
Surprisingly, this movie works as a cute family film with plenty of laughs and endearing moments. Julie Andrews and Billy Crystal add an irresistible bit of charm to The Rock's smile. Both Stephen Merchant of the Office and Seth MacFarlane of The Family Guy are well cast here.
Kids will love this and adults will find themselves enjoying it too even though they don't want to admit it. Not Oscar material, but not too shabby either.
George Clooney does a wonderful job of portraying a man who fires people for corporations too afraid to fire them by themselves. His work keep him traveling via jet across the country. In fact he only spends a few day a year at home making the time he spends in the air his new home and hence the name of the film. His life has been without personal attachments until now, but things are changing. The woman who have come into his life are making him reconsider, but there's trouble afoot. As the title suggests the answers are left up in the air, yet the story telling is topical and at times poignant. From the director of Juno. Smart and well directed..
Don't expect a Lord of the Rings here. Many will be disappointed because it does not go where you expect or want. But its a powerful tale that is tastefully told. Stanley Tucci is amazing and all but unrecognizable. Saoirse Ronan does an admirable job as 14 year old Susie Salmon who tells us she has been murdered at the onset and therein changes the course of what might have been a murder mystery. The story centers on her soul finding meaning and dealing with revenge and love. Strong visual effects of the in between world where she tries to make sense of a senseless act. Quiet and moving. Some men might not be quick to relate to this type of story.
Sherlock Holmes this is not and Sir Arthur Connan Doyle must be turning over in his grave at this action reinterpretation of his far more intellectual classic, yet if you are willing to look at it as an action/mystery flick it works. Robert Downey Jr. carries the film (as usual) and Jude Law easily fits in as his sidekick. The wry wit and clever dialog almost force you to enjoy their uneasy partnership. In the end its just another buddy movie, but its fun.
Nine is the antithesis of a Hollywood musical. Based on Felinni's 8 1/2, it is a surreal reflection on Fellini's struggle with creative block and failed relationships. Do not go expecting another Chicago, its meant to be deeper and more European. Sophia Loren is amazing as are Marion Cotillard, Fergie, Kate Hudson, and Penelope Cruz. Daniel Day-Lewis does an incredible take on Fellini and his director's angst. When everyone expects genius and you feel empty what is left but fear, facade, and fraud. Powerful but not for everyone.
This is a film that defies the Hollywood norms of beauty. The heretofore actress Gabourey Sidibe does an incredible job portraying an obese 16 year old pregnant mother living in an abusive home in Harlem. Mo'Nique plays against type as the mother who hates her. Mariah Carey does an admirable job as the social worker. And Lenny Kravitz puts in a brief but wonderful appearance as a male nurse's aid who befriends Precious. The story is both stark and sad but shows that there is always hope. Its well worth seeing and a strong Oscar contender. Well done!
Roland, Independence Day, Emmerich has made yet another action packed screen filling wild ride of dynamic special effects laden movie once again. His scripts are far from intellectual, but the action is always over the top as are the special effects. If you crave watching John Cusack escape time and again as the road collapses ten feet behind him, this is your dream film. Because he does it again and again making even Indiana Jones jealous of his amazing luck and timing.
Who even cares what the story is as long as the action is nonstop in a movie like this. And it definitely is!
There are laughs to be had in this nice family film, but the exceptional talents of Robin Williams, John Travolta, and Seth Green are wasted in this very weak script. None of them get an opportunity to do what we all expect of them.
With that said, there is nothing wrong with the film. Its very average, mindless, and cute. Its a fine film to take kids to. They would appreciate it. A few of the sight gags are very entertaining. The problem is that they are all in the previews. If you've seen them, you know the whole film.
Promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep, would be the review by Robert Frost of this sad and bleak masterpiece. The story chronicles the journey of a father and son on a mission to find a place to survive after an apocalypse. The world is depicted here in shades of gray with dying and the death dominating the drama. Yet the Morgensen as the father has a mission to keep his son alive and find a safe place or at least keep them from being taken by cannibals. Robert Duval is powerful in his short but profound scene. Unlike most films of this sort, the viewpoint is intelligent and alarming and not full of special effects.
