A Serious Man has some serious pleasures, mostly in it's seemingly pitch perfect depiction of a growingly confident and increasingly secular middle class American suburban Judaism in the late 1960's. These scenes are very funny and touching, and luckily, enough to sustain a story that, while interesting, is not as strong. Overall very enjoyable.
Again and again, Mike Leigh has proven himself the master of character studies in modern cinema. This movie is no exception. Through measured pacing and layered details he creates rich portraits of not only his eternally optimistic main character, Poppy, but a raft of supporting characters as well. These are not "Hollywood types". What they are, is vivid portrayals of very real seeming people in contemporary London. Brilliant.
