Hugo is a marvelous example of cinema storytelling that adeptly pays homage to the magic of filmmaking specifically and the indomitable power of the human spirit in general. The plot is as focused and economical as the machines that help tell the story, and the expert performances from all draw from an engaging fusion of sentiment and grit. Scorsese's ability to conjure up both poignancy and exuburance without approaching mawkishness is a joy. Without question, Hugo has been one of the best film-going experiences in my 61 years.
