This is a "big" movie. The alien monsters are huge (could eat Godzilla in one gulp), the robots that fight them are 25 stories tall, and all of the various sets are equally huge. I was very impressed with the overall scale of everything in this movie. And of course with today's special effects everything looks amazingly real.
I found the movie mostly entertaining. For me, the various battles between the aliens and robots each went on too long. There were several different battle scenes and each one could have been cut by half which would have reduced the movie's overlong two hours and eleven minute running time.
My only other quibble is the introduction of several cornball characters. I could have done without the two constantly squabbling scientists. Actually, they needed to be in the movie as they were important to the plot but did they really have to be such clowns? However, my girl friend thought they were entertaining. She is obviously easily amused.
I liked Charlie Hunnam, a tv actor playing the lead role. And Rinko Kukuchi was an interesting presence. Idris Elba came across as a little too stiff and uptight for me.
Overall an entertaining movie although most of that for me was the special effects.
This is a completely different Superman story than anything that's been conceived before. I liked the beginning of the film and the scenes on Krypton made me wonder what type of mind could even think up a place that looked like that.
I liked the interplay between Superman and Lois Lane. In this movie the instant she meets him she knows he is not human or at least has superhuman powers.
Michael Shannon does a terrific job portraying the evil General Zog.
My only quibble with the film is all of fighting and destruction that takes up about the last third of the film goes on way, way too long. The movie is two hours and 23 minutes long and it could easily have been ten or fifteen minutes shorter. The destruction just goes on and on and eventually becomes mind numbing.
We always like to see the good guys whip up on the bad guys and that is certainly the case here. When will those eastern Europeans wise up to the fact that they can't mess with Liam Neeson's character and live to tell about it?
Like most movies of this type there is a lot of stuff in it that is totally unbelievable and could never happen in real life. But you just have to look past all that stuff and roll with it.
And I just don't see Liam Neeson and Famke Janssen producing a daughter who looks like Maggie Grace. But that's ok too. I like all three of them and they are fun to watch.
The first third of the movie sets the stage and once the action starts it is non-stop and pretty intense, even for me. I found myself getting somewhat uncomfortable during some of the scenes in that I was really worried about the outcome for some of the characters. So obviously the film makers had me somewhat convinced it was really happening.
Most of it takes place in Ankara, Turkey, and the settings were very interesting and unusual.
My gf also really liked it but she is an action junkie too.
This is a terrific film and highly entertaining. The hand held camera work is annoying at first but you quickly adapt to it. Jennifer Lawrence is outstanding as is the rest of the cast. The "Gale" character is a small role in this film but you will see much more of him in later films. Rumor is the other two books will be made into three films.
The "kids killing kids" issue is handled well without being overly gory or off-putting.
This is the best of all the Mission Impossible films. For once it has a storyline that can be followed. The 37 minutes of true IMAX footage is spectacular. The scenes on the exterior of the world's tallest building in Dubai are heart stopping. For me, the only thing about the movie that I didn't care for was the more or less comic character played by Simon Pegg. I didn't feel his cornball activities belonged in this movie.
This movie has some very clever twists built into it. Nothing makes sense for the first two thirds of the film but when it finally does all start to come clear, a plot is revealed that is beyond the imagination. I have long been a Diane Kruger fan but other than Englorious Basterds, was never very impressed by the characters she plays. However in Unknown she is the most interesting character she has ever played and it is hard to take your eyes off her when she is on the screen.
Contrary to what some other reviews have said, I thought the entire concept was new and fresh and not a retread of anything else. I liked the new actors. Alex Pettyfer was good in the lead role of Number four. Number Six was smoking hot and the gal from Glee was a sweetie. The movie did have a few slow spots but those were easy to overlook. The movie ended in a way that set the stage for a sequel which I am looking forward to seeing assuming they make one. Overall an entertaining movie. I was also very pleased to see that the entire film was actually shot in IMAX format (which was how we saw it) which is somewhat rare for general release type films.
While Tron Legacy looks to be about 99.9% computer generated, the scenes on the IMAX 3D screen are among the most visually arresting I have ever seen. The immense scale of the Tron universe is almost impossible to take in. The graphics in this movie are light years better than the original Tron, which I always considered a disappointment from what I had expected before I went. Whereas in the case of Tron Legacy, it was far better than what I expected. The story line is preposterous, as was the original Tron, but what you are seeing on the screen more than makes up for it. I was blown away at how realistic the young Jeff Bridges face looked.
I really enjoyed this movie despite a few slow spots. Hailee Steinfeld is the real star of the film with Bridges a close second. She is in nearly every scene and commands the screen. I agree with other reviews that the ending wasn't as satisfying as it could have been but that's a minor complaint.
The first 15 minutes or so introduces the characters and gets the story rolling and after that it is non stop action and suspense. Even though you know how it will end, there is still plenty of suspense.
