I was enthralled from beginning to end by Ms. Fleming and Mr. Brownlee's performance. I think they had wonderful chemistry. The body language from Ms. Fleming was soft, inviting and loving (when wooing Ribaldo). Mary Zimmerman was, as always, creative and magical. The choreography of ballet and demons was superb. And a perfect choice and performance from Cupid. The only thing I could see that might be less than perfect was a few of the animals hanging and perched on the backdrop. They weren't alive and looked very posed--- but sitting in a movie theatre with closeups is different from sitting in the live audience, so perhaps I am harsh.
I"d never seen this opera, but know the Shakespeare play very well and was captivated by the operatic performance!! The fact that the plot diverged from Shakespeare's is immaterial. It had to because it had to be adapted to lengthy musical pieces. I was astounded by the beauty of the music and thought the lack of "sets" made us focus on the music and acting rather than a spectacular set (as in Madama Butterfly" and "The Magic Flute" productions (which were wonderful in their own way. Ophelie, flown in from Europe on a moment's notice to play the part, was WONDERFUL. What a voice! What subtle acting skills! The whole performance was a joy to behold.
