This Barber of Seville was the best I've ever seen--twice! (I saw original HD performance also. I really miss the enjoyable intermission features.) Each voice was a joy, the humor infectious, the interactions, the stage "shtick", beautifully done. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, except for no intermission. That is too long for mostly seniors to sit without a break! At this theater, the sound was just a tad low, probably because people had complained of loudness in the past. I suggest all the theaters that show these operas should check the sound at the beginning. Keep these operas coming!!!
I've seen Butterfly maybe 2 dozen times over my lifetime, and this was one of the two that moved me the most. The singing and acting were extraordinary! Racette's acting, movements, and voice made it especially poignant. I loved the staging, the colors, sets, the appealing little boy puppet, seemed more real than an actual child onstage! This was a joy to see, despite the tragedy; very satisfyng. I LOVE the between- acts interviews and insights. If someone doesn't, they could leave until the next act--very easily. I go to EVERY HD opera, someimes for both showings.
I would always recommend theses HD performances of a really top opera company! Where else can you get the best set in the house, for only $20, and a thrilling opera experience. The voices are glorious, the best! sets and costumes, conductor and orchestra-- a treat!. Georgiou was suffering from a bad cold, but carried on in very fine voice. Puccini's music is lovely, always very romantic.
I imagine youngsters of today would not understand the heroine abandoning her love because she has a past, and therefore cannot marry her lover. .One has to understand it in the societal context of the time.
