A movie about teenage love and “vegetarian” vampires, is there any way that a movie with a premise like that be worth seeing? I have to admit, YES. My daughter has been reading, and loves, the Twilight series of books and she thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Now my son thought the movie was absolutely a waste of time and I’ll admit that I did not like the movie as much as my wife and daughter did. This is definitely a “chick flick.”
Valkyrie does a fantastic job of paying homage to the hero of the German people, Claus von Stauffenberg and painting the historic picture that there were those in German politics and the German Army who knew Hitler was simply evil and that he must go. The movie correctly portrays that there had been numerous failed attempts to assassinate Hitler until von Stauffenberg, who came in and energized the conspirators to their biggest plan yet. There were reports that Claus von Stauffenberg’s son, who is a retired German Army General, was concerned over Cruise’s portrayal of his father due to Cruise’s religious beliefs; Cruise’s portrayal does nothing short of truly showing that Claus von Stauffenberg is a true German hero of WWII.
The second in the new era of the Daniel Craig as Bond is filled with action and a good storyline that flows very neatly from Casino Royale. Now, I do have to admit that I have heard a lot of complaints and criticism about this movie: there weren’t enough gadgets and that the storyline was too hard to follow. I have to agree that unlike the Bond movies of the past, you really need to pay attention to what is happening on the screen or you could get lost in the storyline. Now on the other side of that coin, the acting in this movie compared to the Bonds of the past is far superior presenting a more realistic Bond much like the character presented in the Ian Fleming novels. This is an excellent movie, so go see it.
I obligated to first say that if any one has not read Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth they should. It is not just because of this movie that you should read the novel, but because it is a great story. The book will be much more entertaining than this movie or even the original 1959 Journey to the Center of the Earth movie starring Pat Boone and George Mason; which I also recommend for everyone to see. Now, this modern day 3D movie; well I cannot help but say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, this movie made too much use of the 3D gimmick to show fish jumping right at you, or killer plants coming right at you. With that aside, it was a cute, entertaining adaptation of the Jules Verne tale. I firmly believe that if you take the kids out for a family night at the movies, this is your movie. They will love it….and then get them the book to read.
This is a great movie and the late Heath Ledger, in my opinion, is due at least an Oscar nomination. Even with that said, as a parent, I feel obligated to start off with a warning. This movie is very, very intense, and may not be a movie for all kids. The Joker’s “magic trick” at the beginning of the movie is a prime example of this. I would suggest that any parent should see this movie first then judge if you should take the kids or not. With the warning aside, the movie is not just the fantastic tale of a comic book hero in a fantasy world. No, this is a movie that makes you feel that Gotham City is in the real world and that Batman is a real live superhero. This is brought on not by Christian Bale’s performance as Batman, though it is quite good. This realism is brought on by Heath Ledger as the Joker. This is not the campy Cesar Romero Joker from the television series Batman or even the somewhat campy Jack Nicholson Joker from Tim Burton’s Batman movie. The Heath Ledger Joker is the epitome of the darkness within us all. This Joker is a psychopathic, sociopath killer who truly revels in the violence, death, and chaos that he brings to Gotham City. Fortunately for us all our faith in good, right, and justice wins the day. This is a great movie, but for parents with kids, who want to see this movie, please heed my warning I stated at first. I know that my eleven year old daughter was trouble after the movie by the character of the Joker.
Hellboy 2 The Golden Army not only tells a story with acting, but also by the great visual scenes created by Guillermo Del Toro. This movie was wonderful in creating a fantastic alien world hidden within our own. The creativeness alone in the creation of the extra characters that made up the Troll Market and the trip to the Golden Army was worth the ticket price alone. Yes, this movie had much more story than action like the first Hellboy, but it is well worth it. Do be prepared that the movie does drag a bit is certain parts, but not much. My kids were in awe of this movie!!
Pixar has done it again!! A story of love told by two robots; coupled with a green story to protect the earth. Even though some parts of the story are very sad, the movie is still good. The idea that we have wrecked our world with our own trash is far too real and hits too close to home. Also, the fat blobs that we turn into in our throw away work free way of life are becoming too real in our society today. Even with these depressing parts of the story, it is still elevated by the love of two robots that bring us back to earth.
What in the world happend to Indiana Jones? Well in this installment we found out that Indy got really stupid. The whole story line was very, very weak. The actors appeared to be there for their pay checks and not for the craft of acting. This movie was terrible. My kids saw this movie and both of them said at the end, "This movie stinks."
To say this movie stunk would be giving it too much credit. Overacting abounds in this movie and it was soooo slooow paced. Even my two children who went with me to this movie thought it was "boring and stupid." Find another movie to spend your money on.
Of all of the comic book hero movies, this is one of the best. Not only is it a good movie, with great acting, it is a great movie for the family. Dad's take your kids they will enjoy the movie, and so will you!!
