Okay, in my opinion I would have had more fun sitting in my front yard and watch the grass grow. I thought the movie was dull, the action was lackluster, and the acting was terrible, but I am a guy. Now my daughter and wife thought this movie was a terrific romance story. They absolutely loved the movie. Guys, fair warning; if any of your girl friends want to see this movie they will really enjoy it, but you will be tortured by it.
Okay this is the third installment in the Toy Story saga, and appears to be the last. When I first saw that this movie was coming out, I honestly thought that it was going to be bad and worn out. I am very happy to report that I was completely wrong. Toy Story 3 was very original in its story and a great deal of fun. The Spanish speaking Buzz Lightyear was a tremendous hit. I will give one warning to all of the parents attending this movie. At the end as Andy moves on in his life, I saw many parents (including me) who had a tear in their eye remembering how fleeting their children’s childhood is. Even with that said, this is a great movie!!
I have seen other reviews that claim this movie is awesome and stunning. Well I must have seen a completely different movie, because I spent parts of the movie being bored. Okay I have said this before and I’ll say it again now; special effects enhance a movie they do not make the movie. The effects in Prince of Persia were great, and the story line was okay, but the acting was very weak. I had a very hard time taking Jake Gyllenhaal as a Middle Eastern, street urchin become prince (I think Disney did that one better). Plus there was absolutely no chemistry between Gyllenhaal and his love interest Gemma Arterton. Now the one actor, who did a great job, as always, was Ben Kingsley as the evil uncle. Yes, I was entertained by this movie and yes, so was my family, but this is a matinee movie purchase at best.
If you are looking for Robin Hood like Errol Flynn’s 1938 Robin Hood or Kevin Costner’s 1991 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves; this is not it and you will be disappointed. This is set as a tale that sets the stage for the coming of Robin Hood. I think that Ridley Scott would have been better off announcing that in the title. As for the movie itself, I enjoyed it. Was it as good as previous Ridley Scott or Russell Crowe movies? No it wasn’t. The movie did drag along for several parts and the story line was rather weak. The character that I thought made the movie was King John as portrayed by Oscar Isaac; now he was entertaining. Overall the movie was fun, but as a matinee or a rental, not as a full price ticket.
To all parents, this IS NOT the Disney Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton did a wonderful job of mixing live action and animation. Also the performance of Johnny Depp was great, as usual, but there were times that the movie was rather intense. There were several small children in the theater when I took my kids and their friends. Some of the small children were frightened by this version of Alice. So, even though the movie is very good, parents chose movies wisely.
Brendan Frazier’s movies are either very entertaining or pretty lame. He seems to be very hit and miss with his movies, but this is a bit a little more middle of the road. Now is it good to be mediocre, no; but the movie was entertaining. My daughter chose to see this movie with me as a reward and to be honest I was expecting the worst. The movie was dumb, but had a few laughs and it was obvious that the younger audience was enjoying it. So, see it for what it is…a movie for kids.
There are very few, if not just a handful, of sequels that are actually better that the original movie. Well, Iron Man 2 is one of those movies. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark and does an excellent job. He seems to call on the experiences of his own personal demons to portray Tony Stark’s battles with his personal demons. It is a great and very human portrayal of a superhero. Even with Downey’s excellent acting the movie was truly made by the Mickey Rourke and his portrayal of the super villain Whiplash. It is wonderful to Rourke back acting and acting very well. Whiplash is not just some sort of thug, but a man hell bent to avenge his father’s death because of what he thinks the Stark family has done to them. This movie is well acted, fun to watch, and just a great movie.
Anyone who grew up seeing the Ray Harryhausen version of Clash of the Titans will be very disappointed, though there is one very funny reference to the old movie. Now to the present…or ancient…oh never mind to the movie, the special effects for this version of the Clash of the Titans were great. Unfortunately special effects do not make a movie, acting and story does. This version of the Clash of the Titans lacks acting and a story. It is truly sad with all of the acting talent the movie had that it was not better. It was not helped that the story line had major holes in it and was overall very poor. This is a fun movie to watch, but from the dollar rental machine not in a pricy theater.
Okay folks those of you who want to see the novel exactly as it is on the screen; well you’re not going to see that. In reality I have yet to see a movie follow a book exactly. Even with that said, what about this movie? It was great fun and it was very entertaining. This is an excellent movie for the entire family and if parents use it right it will get the kids interested in reading the books.
I cannot believe that I allowed my son to talk me into seeing this movie. It looked stupid and dumb from the ads and boy did it live up to its billing. The movie was supposed to be a comedy, but there was nothing funny about it at all!! The acting was pitiful, the story was stupid, and laughs were non-existent. It was so bad that my son apologized for having me spend money on this movie.
