It was a somewhat interesting story, and the acting was excellent, but I guess I just wasn't that interested in the trials and tribulations of someone born into royalty. Yes, he had an issue, and yes he overcame it, but it certainly wasn't a real-world experience. I just had a difficult time empathizing with the prince/king. Also, the first half moved rather slowly.
I'd have preferred a clearer, articulated difference between the good and bad characters, but other than that this movie was great. This is the way all action films should be made: intelligent and engaging, as opposed to mindless and bloody.
Having seen several similar movies, I thought there would be something unusual about this one, but, alas, there wasn't. The writing, cast, and story were all average, and the directing below-average. If you want to see a movie, and have no interest in any of the other choices at the theater, at least this one isn't *that* bad.
And by "fantastic" I mean "unrestrainedly fanciful", not "wonderful". Not that the movie doesn't have merits; it does. I gave it 4 stars because it has good acting and an original style - and because it is entertaining - but if you need plots and stunts to be believable you may not like this one.
Lots of good things in this movie, but it really is a bit of a farce. No real message, other than "if you are a killer you might end up killing someone you didn't mean to", but even that message is somewhat hidden. Overall, a fun movie without any real intellectual stimulation, or any real point. So I'd recommend it to those who prefer date-night entertainment that is guaranteed NOT to be the source of future conversation.
As long as you aren't looking for a lot of intrigue, suspense, or mental stimulation, this is a pretty good movie. Good writing and acting, and some pretty funny scenes. I'd prefer a "Bourne Identity", though.
I expected to like this movie, since I generally enjoy feel-good movies where the good guys win (I loved the first Rocky film) but I was surprised that this movie included parents and coaches cheering as 12-yr olds kicked each other in the face. If this was a film about animals fighting (ala cockfights) there'd be a hue and cry about the cruelty, but somehow when the animals are replaced with children most reviewers on this site highly recommend the experience. Granted, there wasn't much if any blood, but that certainly wasn't because the kids weren't trying! Maybe if I'd seen the original years ago I'd have been less disappointed. (And no, I'm not a pansy-assed liberal!)
After reading the reviews I was expecting a better-than-average movie - even though I knew it was a chick flick - and that's exactly what I experienced: a better-than-average chick flick. Guys can earn points and still be entertained.
Date Night is exactly what you think it is: a funny movie that intends to do nothing but entertain married couples. It does, however, unintentionally illustrate what can happen when one compromises his integrity, even slightly.
I disagree with all the criticisms listed in these reviews, except the comments about how the movie drags a bit. But that was a very small price to pay for a well-written, well-acted film that had a Braveheart-type message of "individual liberty vs. tyranny". For the first time in my life, I'm looking forward to a sequel!
