This new Trek was a mind-blowing experience. The actors were amazing and brought each of the icons they were playing to life. Chris Pine oozed cockiness and leadership, Zachacy Quinto made you feel Spock's inner turmoil and conflicted emotions and Karl Urban WAS "Bones" McCoy. The rest of the cast was, pardon the pun, stellar. Zoe Saldana brought a great charm and intelligence to Uhura, John Cho exhibited his swordsmanship and humor and the oh so young Alton Yelchin played Chckov's accent up in a believable manner yet got to show off his mad science skills. Special kudos to Bruce Greenwood for bringing Captain Christopher Pike to life and being a mentor to the rebellious young Kirk.
The writers of Monsters vs Aliens did a good job of making an animated film that appeals to children but has a subversive layer of humor for adults. There are some great cultural references that hearken back to the 60's, 70's and 80's. You get a real taste of that when "The President" climbs the stairway/podium to try to make contact with the alien. I look forward to watching the extras on the coming DVD to see how all the character voices enjoyed this experience.
I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said about this great film. Heath Ledger better win the Oscar for his brilliant portrayal of the Joker. I just hope Aaron Eckhart doesn't get overlooked as I thought his role as Two-Face was very well-done. While The Joker was insanely evil from the start, Eckhart had to take his character from being the "white knight" good guy to a place of darkness and despair. Christian Bale was the center of gravity for this story keeping all the threads together and moving the story along to the end where he disappears off into the "dark knight" and the promise of the next sequel.
If you watched the X-Files religiously, then you will go and see this movie. If you were a casual fan, you can wait until it comes out on DVD where we can only hope Chris Carter explains why he took this feature film in this direction. It would have made an excellent two-part episode during the series TV run but I was disappointed in it as a major movie event.
My wife and I had free passes to see this movie. I went thinking it might be OK but I wasn't expecting much. I admit I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this film. While Kevin Costner and several of the other "name" actors did a fine job, this movie was stolen by the superb acting skills displayed by newcomer Madeline Carroll. She helped motivate this film from being a trite comedy into a funny yet touching story about a father and a daughter trying to connect.
The main plot line about how one man's vote can make a difference worked better than it should have as the writers took on just how desperate, silly and manipulative both major political parties are in their attempts to attract voters to their cause.
While this isn't Shakespeare, it isn't as bad as the critics will make it out to be because this Madeline Carroll actress will win you over. She has a bright future ahead of her in the industry.
